The Navy has a rich history in Mount Dora, Florida. The city was founded by the United States in 1820 as Fort Dora. It was renamed Jacksonville in 1837 and became part of the Union navy during World War II. The city's naval base, known as Naval Station Jacksonville, continues to play an important role in US military operations today. During World War II, Naval Station Jacksonville played an instrumental role in the defense of Florida and the Caribbean. The station provided training for many veteran sailors and marines who later fought in various wars throughout the world. In 1947, Naval Station Jacksonville was transferred to the Department of Defense and became Naval Base Miami-Dade. Today, Naval Base Miami-Dade is home to both US Navy ships and Marine Corps units from all over Florida. Naval Station Jacksonville played a significant role in Mount Dora's history too. After it was destroyed by fire on October 3rd, 1916, Naval Station Jacksonville reopened three days later with new facilities that included a smallpox hospital and dispensary. This hospital is still used today as a wellness center for local residents and tourists alike. In 1949, the City of Mount Dora donated land adjacent to Naval Base Miami-Dade for use as a military reserve training area known as "Camp Mockingbird." This camp served as a launching point for combat pilots during World War II and later served as an airbase for fighter planes during Vietnam War era exercises Today, Camp Mockingbird remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mount Dora thanks to its historically significant buildings and interesting features

Mount Dora is a small mountain located in western Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is part of the Everglades National Park and was first mentioned by Spanish explorers in 1539. The mountain was named for Don Diego de Dora, captain of the expedition that discovered Florida in 1620. The area around Mount Dora became known as the "Dorado Desert" because of its rich gold and silver mines. In 1881, Mount Dora was donated to the United States by Spain as part of a land swap that ended Cuba's war with America. Today, Mount Dora is home to many attractions including a botanical garden, golf courses, restaurants, and a casino.
In 1892, Mount Dora was founded by Dr. John C. Fairbanks and his wife, Eliza Ransom. The town was named for the mountain range that lined the area. In 1915, the population of Mount Dora reached 511 people. In 1930, the United States Post Office moved from its original location in downtown to a new building just east of the mountains. The first post office in Mount Dora met on November 1, 1930. By 1941, there were 693 residents living in Mount Dora and it had grown to a population of 2,505 by 1951. It had grown even more rapidly during World War II when the town became an official military garrison and production center for remote areas of Florida Bay because of its strategic location at an intersection of two major highways. With Rapid City nearby and demand for goods coming from both sides of the bay (related to aircraft manufacturing),Mount Dora grew quickly into one of South Florida's most important towns during this time period The post office closed down in 1970 but continued to be used as a storage building until it was razed in 1984 In 1990, I-4 corridor project began with construction of bypass around town which increased traffic congestion on main road As result many businesses left town & development took place along US-441 corridor
