Mount Dora is a small mountain located in the state of Florida, near Jacksonville. It is part of the barrier island system and was once a major outlet for salt water from the Gulf of Mexico. The mountain has been used as a location for film and TV productions, including Forrest Gump, The Omen, Armageddon, and Pirates of Caribbean. The first settlers to Mount Dora came from Georgia in 1827. They built a cabin on top of the mountain and named it after their native country, Dora. Over time, other families moved to Mount Dora from around Florida. In 1845, Captain John Hite made his first trip up to Mount Dora with his slave party when he was looking for land to purchase in Jacksonville. After purchasing 2 ½ acres at the base of Mount Dora, Hite started building a home there that still stands today. In 1849-1850, Captain John Hite's son Elijah set out with three boats full of passengers and goods bound for Stonington Island in Connecticut on what became known as the "Doro Adventure". It was one of many such trips during that period that helped promote development along the Atlantic coast. When they reached Stonington Island, the group encountered difficulty getting ashore due to high waves and rough seas. They were eventually able to build some rudimentary homes before returning home without incident on July 10th 1850s aboard HMS Beagle which had sailed into nearby Havana Bay weeks earlier with specimens collected by British scientist James Cook! The first permanent settler at Mount Dora was Daniel Webster who arrived in 1840 with his family after living on West Indian islands for several years previous. He built himself a log cabin on top of MtDora where he later died in 1865 aged 84 years old while serving as US Senator from New Hampshire! His widow continued living there until her death in 1917 aged 86 years old! When slavery ended throughout most of America following Reconstruction in 1865 following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (January 6th), many white abolitionists relocated southward towards states like Florida which now held free black citizens under Union rule post-Civil War! This migration also included many slaves who had been taken away from their masters during the war effort efforts by Northern forces! Many African Americans enlisted or volunteeredduring this time period sided with Northern Union troops against Confederate General Robert E Lee & his army) even working construction projects along military installations across Southern United States!! Mount Dora saw its sharecasualties during this era due largely to disease & violence brought about by both sides involved!! Upon Webster's death & wife Emma's retirement plans being thwarted by her husband's long illness (& final days), she sold most everything they owned including their house at Middletown Road just outside town limits today - an event now celebrated annually as Negro Day!]Emma Webster House currently resides within National Park Service boundaries
