When the United States Air Force first became a force in World War II, it was based in Naples, Florida. The air force's first unit to arrive in the area was the 416th Bombardment Group, which arrived on October 15, 1942. The group's mission was to bombed Japanese targets in the region. The 416th BG also played a significant role during the war years by providing airlift for American troops and supplies. In early 1945, as Japan began its final throes of defeat, the416BG used their own Boeing B-29 Superfortresses to supply Allied forces fighting inside Japan. This was one of only a few instances where an American military bomber squadron participated directly in combat against an enemy nation. In 1946, when America got out of World War II, Naples came under control of the new United States Air Forces Central Command (USAFCC). As part of this command, Naples became headquarters for all USAAF assets located in Florida and Southeast Texas. From here it oversaw all support activities for USAF units stationed around the world. Among these assets were two bombardment groups that RAF personnel left behind when they evacuated from England:the 419th Bombardment Group and 460th Bombardment Group both stationed at RAF Tiburon near San Diego County before being reassigned to Naples on December 14th 1944 as part of Operation Crossroads which aimed to jumpstart postwar development in California by moving key resources away from occupied Japan and towards rebuild economic infrastructure there. These aircraft remained parked at Tiburon until May 1951 when they were moved again – this time into Dowden AFB then finally Tucson AFB Arizona before being scrapped there on July 3rd 1956 after having served 12 years!
