The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Naples, Florida was organized on December 17, 1915. In its early years the CG AO had a small force of only twenty-eight officers and men. The first members of the Auxiliary were women volunteers. In 1924, the CG AO became an official branch of the Florida National Guard under the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of State Police. This change in status made it possible for CG AO members to serve as law enforcement officers within their own communities. On June 1, 1933, the CG AO became a part of Naval Reserve Command and began providing security for vessels involved in fishing operations off our coast. In 1941, hostilities began in World War II and Coast Guard Station Naples was activated on September 1st as a result of military ordersGovt Order No. 592 “Instructing all Officers and Men employed by Government agencies with special reference to their duty concerning coastal defense” . Since then Coast Guard Station Naples has been responsible for protecting both state citizens and federal government property along our coastline from unauthorized access or use by unauthorized individuals or groups including smugglers operating out of Mexico City; pirates operating off Key West; recreational boaters who have wandered into unpatrolled areas; fishermen usinganchored vessels while underway when they are not expected to participate in commercial endeavors; Civilians working at naval bases which provide harbor access without restriction from any direction…the list goes on!
