Naples, Florida is a city located in the panhandle of Florida. At one time it was the largest Spanish settlement in North America and now ranks as one of the most diverse cities in the United States. The city was founded on December 12, 1835 by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and his troops after their victory over Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto. Santa Anna named Naples after himself, while Fort Donelson, later renamed Fort Myers, was named for General Andrew Jackson. The first settlers to Naples were Mexican soldiers who arrived in search of new land to settle after Mexico's defeat at Alamo Heights. By 1836 about eighty families had moved to Naples from Texas and California. In 1840 two American traders, John Hogg and Nathan Bedford Forrest, landed at Naples with intentions of trade but soon realized that there were no fertile lands in this area. They began to explore other areas for potential investment but never returned to Naples until 1850 when they built a trading post on what is now Fifth Street near present-day University Avenue. In 1851 Captain David Humphreys organized a company of volunteer Marines called "the Legion" under Major James Fenton and sailed down the Gulf Stream from Havana Harbor with orders to find new markets for American goods in Europe. On November 1st they sighted an uninhabited island off shore called Isla Grande which they took possession of without fighting because it seemed too dangerous to sail closer than twenty miles! They named their fort Fort Donelson after General Andrew Jackson who had won them this battle five years earlier at Mobile Bayou (present day Pensacola). This successful foray into Spanish territory marked the beginning of Hispanic settlement in Florida which would last until 1898 when Spain ceded all its remaining territories east of Tampa Bay to the United States (except Cuba). On December 12th, 1835 General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered his forces intoNaples following their victory over Mexico at San Jacinto Creek bridge where more than 2,000 Mexicans died including many officers and commanders such as Generals Vicente Cámara and José Miguel Estrada Alamos during this key event leading up to Texan independence from Mexico Spanish records indicate that 3 companies totaling 140 men reached Naples on December 6th but only 10 men made it back alive due largely to disease including smallpox brought over by Lieutenant Francisco Pacheco from Havana who contracted it while living aboard ship La Isabela . After landing these ten men proceeded inland where they erected a stockade around what is today Plaza De la Constitución facing south along Present-day Fourth Street . A small chapel also stood here before being destroyed by fire in 1860s Santa Ana awarded land grants throughout Orange County encompassing present dayNaples through Mission Trails Road although some boundaries remain undetermined today . In 1881, the Naples Female Seminary opened in what is now the Naples-Marco Island Historic District. The seminary was founded by a group of nuns from Rome who were moving to Marco Island to start an academy for girls. The first students were taught at home and then moved to the seminary in 1882. It was located on what is now Constitution Boulevard between Roosevelt Avenue and U.S. 1A. In 1905, the seminary became a coeducational institution and changed its name to the Newman School of Theology and Religion (now Newman University). The seminarians at the seminary developed a strong interest in preaching and teaching scripture, theology, church history, philosophy, Bible study, education, social work and music theory. They also began publishing a theological journal called "The Beacon". In 1928, when all female seminaries in America were closed by law due to funding cuts by President Hoover's New Deal administration, the Newman School reopened as Florida State College for Women under president Franklin D.
