In 1892, Commodore John C. Stennis donated his personal yacht, USS Olympia, to the City of Naples as a goodwill gesture after the Spanish–American War. At that time, Naples was just emerging as an important naval port town and Stennis’ donation represented a huge undertaking by both him and the city. Today, USS Olympia remains one of the most iconic symbols associated with Naples – it is often used as a photo spot for events such as Fourth of July celebrations or special occasions like Remembrance Day. Additionally, she has been used as a training vessel for local police officers and firefighters since her retirement from service in 2006. The Naples, Florida Navy Yard was founded in 1887. It served as a Naval facility for the city of Naples until 1943. The yard produced submarines, destroyer escorts, and other naval vessels.
Nelson, Florida is a small town located in Naples, Florida. The population was 7,869 at the 2000 census. Nelson is well known for its fishing, golfing and tourism opportunities. The community has been home to many businesses and families since it was founded in 1881. In recent years, Nelson has seen an increase in development that has led to increased traffic and infrastructure concerns. The history of Nelson begins with John Waddell who settled the area in 1881. He built a cabin on what is now State Road 441A. Over time, other settlers arrived and soon there were four stores, two schools and a post office in the town site. By the early 1920s there were 10 businesses in the town and by 1930 there were 16! The population grew rapidly during World War II when many soldiers came to live or work in the area; they created jobs that supported many people throughout the war. After the war ended, business slowed down as people returned to their regular lives; however, things started to change again around 1990 when new developers . . .
The U.S. navy has a long and rich history of giving gifts to friends and family members. One such tradition is the Navy Exchange, which is an annual event that brings together service members from different branches of the military for exchanging gifts. The exchange encourages mutual understanding and cooperation among servicemen and women, as well as building morale on both sides of the aisle. Over time, there have been many unique and impressive Navy Exchange gifts that have set the standard for others to follow. Some of these include: In 1978, then-Lt. Commander John Ault presented Rear Admiral Jerry Lammers with a customized Corvette Stingray sports car as a gift in memory of their lost brother-in-law Don Lammers (Cheers). This was one of the first ever naval exchanges in which service members from different branches came together to purchase goods or services from each other in order to support common goals. It also helped promote cross-cultural understanding within the military by providing an opportunity for officers from different branches to get face-to-face contact with enlisted personnel from other parts of the nation. In 1992, Rear Admiral Rickover presented Vice Admiral Samuel Eliot Johnson with a custom designed yacht called "Nautilus" as a gift in commemoration of his role leading Project Neptune –a monumental effort to improve underwater warfare capability across all navies worldwide– during The Nixon Administration (See article “Navy Gifts: History Revisited”). This was also one of only two occasions on which senior military officials had received personal gifts at an institutional level (the other being President George H W Bush's presentation to Marine General James Mattis upon his retirement). Just two years later, Rear Admiral David S Guggenheim presented Commandant Gary Hartnickel with a renovated USS Constitution helicopter as part of Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons School's 50th anniversary celebration (See article “Navy Gifts: History Revisited”). This was another significant milestone because it showed how much thought goes into making special gifts for our favorite branchof servicemen and WOMEN who serve America abroad! And finally, just last year we saw another significant accomplishment when Rear Admiral Gary Roughead presented Commandant James F Murphy with a brand new MH-60 Seahawk helicopter Gift Certificate! This was truly something special given that Commodore Murphy had served as Chief Operating Officer at Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons School since its inception over 25 years ago! The history of Naples, Florida is a rich and varied one. The city was founded in 1845 by the brothers Alessandro and Giovanni Buonaparte, who named it after their father, Naples in Italy. The Buonaparte family had originally come to America from Genoa, Italy in 1795. They arrived in Naples as merchants and worked their way up through the ranks of Italian society. In 1814 they purchased the land that now makes up the city limits. Nelson Auriemma attended high school in Naples before going on to attend college at USF (University of South Florida). He led FIBA’s team to three consecutive championships between 1997-2000 while playing for Miami Heat. After his time with Miami, Auriemma became head coach at USF; he is currently leading the Bulls to their first championship since 2003-2004. Another notable figure associated with Naples during its early years was Nino Ponchielli. Ponchielli was a mayor and state legislator from 1907-1913 and served as chair of the City Council from 1914-1920. He also helped found both the American Legion and Knights of Columbus organizations in Naples. Ponchielli is best known for his role as Mayor of Naples from 1922 until 1943 when he was sent into exile due to World War II Allied bombing raids on his home town which destroyed much of downtown Napoli Business District including Ponchielli’s own house which still stands today (now part of University Park). During World War II, many men from south central Florida joined forces with those fighting overseas on various fronts including the United States Army Forces Europe (USAAF) Air Forces supreme command under General Dwight Eisenhower called Operation Overlord which aimed to liberate Nazi Germany via Normandy France while mopping up behind them across occupied Belgium, Luxembourg etc.). Men from Naples volunteered or were drafted into service specifically within this brigade – 326th Bombardment Squadron commanded by Captain Virgilio “Gigi” Catapano – equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses flown by airmen stationed at RAF Lakenheath England where combat operations began on April 6th 1944 codenamed “Ziggy” following Plantation Field Offensive code name for strategic bombardment campaign against German cities such as Dresden & Leipzig targeting industrial targets only weeks prior! This squadron flew more than 2,000 missions over Germany alone during WW2 #1 vs any other unit throughout war! numerous members/survivors honored posthumously including: Lieutenant Colonel Virgilio Catapano Sr., Major General James Fenton CBE DSO USAF Retired Commander Royal Australian Air Force Museum www.rfaamuseum.org ; Captain George Treadaway CBE DL RN RAFVR Grand Old Lodge “The Bluebirds” www .thebluebirdsflightclub dot com; Major General Sidney Johnston KCB MC USAF Retired Commanding Officer 9th Armored Division (Airmobile)www .9tharmoureddivision dot org In total almost 5200 men lost their lives serving our country during WWII making it one of world's most deadliest conflicts

As a result of this battle, Fort Donelson fell and Tennessee became an integral part of the Confederacy. After the Civil War ended, Nashville began to grow rapidly as a center for commerce and culture. This growth led to new development in Naples and other areas around town. In 1964, Naples joined Pinellas County as an independent county. Today, Naples is one of Florida's most vibrant communities and its economy continues to be based on its ties to tourism and commerce
