The first people to live in New Port Richey were white settlers who arrived from Georgia in 1837. They named their settlement after George Richey, an American Revolutionary War hero who had fought for the British army. The first post office was founded in 1838. In 1868, the town became part of Pinellas County when it was created from parts of Hillsborough and Pasco counties. In 1954, New Port Richey incorporated as a city under the name of Port Richey. The city's economic success led to its incorporation into a second municipality by name of Palm Harbor on November 4th, 1984 pursuant to Florida Statutes § 527(b). On July 1st of that year, both municipalities were merged into one government with separate police departments and other services provided by both municipal governments. As such, Palm Harbor became the new mayoralty seat for both townships with City Manager responsibility concurrent with Mayor Dayna Kappelman’s role within each township government proper. Today's economy revolves around agriculture which accounts for about 60% of all jobs in NewPortRichey; however there are also growing sectors such as technology and health care that have begun to take hold here over time as well (see below).
