There is no one answer to the question of how coffee became an important part of New Port Richey’s culture. However, the history of coffee in New Port Richey can be traced back to at least 1872, when a German-born cafe owner named Johann Gutenberg opened his first café on Biscayne Boulevard. Johann Gutenberg was followed by his son and assistant, Wilhelm Gutenberg, who ran the business until 1912. In that year, New Port Richey voters passed a resolution recognizing coffee as an “essential ingredient in local community life” andestablishing a coffee commission to promote its growth and excellence. In 1916, Alfredo Aiello opened his first espresso shop in town and quickly became known for his delicious Italian-style espresso drinks. By 1924, when Guglielmo Marchetti purchased Aiello’s business, coffee had become an important part of NewPortRichey’s cultural landscape. Early Marchetti customers included many prominent locals such as Judge Royce Lamberton and Mary Pickford. During World War II, Marchetti served as Director of Coffee for the US military commands in Italy and Sicily; during this time he also developed what is now considered to be the world’s first automated espresso machine. After World War II ended, Marchetti continued to serve great Italian-style espresso drinks at his store until his death in 1961. His business then passed through several hands before it was sold to Harry Kipperman in 1967. Kipperman ran the establishment until it closed down in 1990; during its time it was home to some of Florida’s most popular java bars including The Java Joes (now known as Joe's Pub) and Tangaroa Cafe (now known as Flying Fish). In 1990, new owners reopened NewPortRichey's only Starbucks location – which remains open today – under the name Arista Coffee & Tea Company. Since that time Arista has been non-stop sources for quality artisan coffee throughout central Florida. New Port Richey is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,821 at the 2010 census. New Port Richey is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It is bordered by Clearwater to the east, Sunrise to the south and Inverness to the west. According to the US Census Bureau, New Port Richey has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. The first European arrivals in what would become Duval County were French people who landed on Christmas Day 1795 on an island near present-day New Port Richey. They named their new settlement Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer after Marie Antoinette's mother, Queen Anne of Austria. The original post office was established in 1807 and was called "Port Royal". A later name for the community was "New Hope". In 1836, Isaac Brock built a plantation on what would become known as False Creek between False Creek Park and Belle Isle Naval Air Station; he named it "Port Royal Plantation". He also founded Brockville Plantation located southeast of New Port Richey across from Belle Isle Naval Air Station. The plantation became one ofDuval County's earliest cotton plantations and still stands today with over 100 acres (40 hectares) under cultivation. By 1840, however, Brock had sold his interest in the plantation to John Ladds who renamed it "Newport News". It wasn’t until 1848 that true citrus production began when George Washington Smith bought 202 acres (81 hectares) along False Creek from Isaac Brock for $5 per acre ($2700 at current prices). He began planting orange trees on this property which became known as “Newport News Citrus Grove” because there were no other orange growers nearer by than Newport News Shipbuilding Company located just north of downtown Norfolk Beach on Elizabeth Sound where they manufactured merchant ships carrying oranges back and forth between England and America during World War II aboard Navy vessels such as USS Constitution (1917–45). After only two years fruit production stopped due to freezes during winter but resumed shortly afterwards due to improved drainage works done by Smith & Sons assisted with funding from state legislatureman James Kenedy who had been influential in getting these projects completed including legislation creating county courthouse square next door then moved inland some few feet so that now you can see it from most parts of town if you ever go out there! After all those years we are finally able to produce some fruit again thanks mostly to state government support! After many failed attempts starting about 1850 various entrepreneurs started crops like corn etc but eventually market demand caused prices for produce hereabouts skyrocketing leading some farmers hereto start selling eggs instead providing chickens & feed etc until about 1925 when egg production really took off resulting in big increase in tax base giving rise to nickname “Egg Harbor” beginning about 1924 since we could now lay eggs without having our farm destroyed or used for anything else not mentioned earlier! In 1928 one man started growing grapeseed which soon led others into grape farming followed by olives several years later; so much has changed around here over time its hard keep up with everything!! annexation happened in 1959 making us part of Jacksonville
New Port Richey was founded by Captain John H. Bogue in 1892. The town was named after his plantation, "New Port Richey Plantation." In 1914, New Port Richey became a U.S. Naval Air Station and later a naval base for the United States Marine Corps. The base closed in 1972 and the Naval Air Station property was sold to developers in 1978. A new shopping center, which is now called the NewPort Center, was built on the former Naval Air Station site in 1986-87.
