New Port Richey is a town in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit New Port Richey were Dutch traders who called it "Nieuwpoort" and "New Harbor". The name came from a nearby creek that they named after the newly founded city of Rotterdam on the River Dutchman in 1621. In 1837, Colonel David J. Butler built a sawmill and grist mill on Canada Creek adjacent to what is now State Road A1A. In 1840, he erected a log cabin as his home and used it as an office for his flour business until he sold it in 1851 to James Cramer. In 1861, Commodore John Sloat built Fort Myers naval station on land which he donated to the state of Florida. He named it for himself and commissioned Captain George Moultrie to build two gunboats there – USS Constitution (1863) and USS Maine (1865). In 1865, Jacksonville consolidated with St Petersburg under Governor Andrew Johnson into one county and New Port became part of that county also known as Duval County. In 1886, NewPort incorporated as a village under Mayor Fenton Waddell with 3 stores and 10 residents. That year also saw completion of the first major extension of Canadian Creek westward from Old Town into present-day New Port Richey - making it possible for farmers to grow corn and other crops on their properties near what is now State Road A1A south of Uptown Boulevard in Old Town... On December 4th 1909Funeral services were held for Mrs Mildred Dean who had been widowed three years earlier while working at her husband's grocery store just east of Uptown Boulevard in Old Town where she had raised 6 children... Mrs Dean was buried beside her husband at Springwood Cemetery.... New Port Richey is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community began as a small post office on December 12, 1881 with eighty-six residents. New Port Richey was named after William Fenton Newcomer and his wife Anna Maria (née Rochefort). The first store in New Port Richey opened on May 4, 1885. By 1900, there were three stores and sixteen residents. In 1916, the first telephone line arrived in New Port Richey and by 1918 it had twelve radios.
