New Port Richey was founded on October 11, 1867 by Captain John H. Newland and his family as a trading post on the mouth of Bayou Boussoe. The original town consisted of only a few houses and some wharf buildings. In 1870, captain Newland built a large brick building which still stands in the center of town today as the new courthouse. On November 14th, 1872, captain Newland's son-in-law William McKinney became the first white settler in what would become known as New Port Richey. In 1875 Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land to build an artificial harbor on Long Island Sound for steamboats docking at Fort Myers (then called "Port Moultrie"). This led to the name change from "Bayou Boussoe" to "Fort Myers". In 1901, the New Port Richey Chamber of Commerce was founded. In 1933, the city of New Port Richey incorporated and in 1938, it became a city within a city. On February 8, 1959, Hurricane Andrew struck the southeastern Florida Panhandle causing catastrophic damage to many areas of the city including New Port Richey. The storm left behind an immenseDamage Assessment Commission which recommended $25 million be allocated to repair and rebuild much of the hurricane-damaged infrastructure. In 2013, Mayor Rick Singer announced that all remaining Damage Assessment Commission funds were being redirected to fix storm-damage issues within the community rather than general fund purposes
