New Port Richey is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 29,711 at the 2010 census. New Port Richey is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It is situated on Pensacola Bay and lies on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. The first Europeans to visit what is now New Port Richey were Spanish explorers who set out from Santa Maria de la Concepción in March 1539 and landed on Pensacola Bay several days later. They named the bay San Miguel because they saw a group of dolphins there (now known to be a white-shark sighting). In 1795, American Revolutionary General James Knoppers established Fort Donelson here after his victory over British Admiral Richard Conner at Mobile Bay; he called it "New Orleans". After that battle and during the War of 1812, cannonballs from Fort Donelson caused severe damage to homes in nearby Mote Key. During World War II, many naval ships stayed here for repairs or training before sailing back home; as a result, NewPortRichey became an important Regional Seaport for shipping traffic in the early 21st century In 1958, more than 60% of all manufactured goods shipped through St Petersburg's Panama Canal arrived via this port - almost twice as much as any other U.S. port combined! The present day skyline of NewPortRichey can be seen extending into Everglades National Park just south of Interstate 95/U.S.-Mexico state line

New Port Richey was founded in 1892 by John F. Kirby and his wife, Anna. The town was named for the Genovese island of Porto Rico. In 1907, Kirby donated land to the city for a new park. New Port Richey had its first mayor in 1912 and a City Council in 1916. The city annexed portions of unincorporated Pinellas County in 1922, and again in 1931. In 1963, the city enacted an ordinance that prohibited discrimination on the basis of race or national origin when hiring workers or services within the city limits. New Port Richey is currently home to over 100 businesses and has a population of over 20,000 people. The history of New Port Richey begins with John Fenton Kirby who came to Florida from Italy in 1892 with his family. He purchased 4 square miles (10 km2) of land east of St Petersburg on the Genovese island ofPorto Rico and naming it New Port Richey after his native country. His original home still stands today as part of the town center: a two-story brick Gothic Revival style structure built between 1893 and 1896 at 521 S Broadway Street which also served as the town hall from 1914 until 1974 when it burned down. Mrs. Anna Kirby donated another 2 acres (8 hectares) adjacent to this home to make way for a public park which was dedicated on May 1st, 1907 by Mayor Harry Auldsmeyer Jr.. With its open spaces, well-manicured gardens and beautiful architecture, Lord Byron's "Pleasure Island" would have been proud to call itself home! In 1922, due to annexation efforts by neighboring St Petersburg proper, New Port Richey became an official municipality with its own police department under Mayor James Treadway III! One notable event during this time period was when Chief Justice Earl Warren delivered his famous address denouncing anti-Semitism throughout America at Raymond Pecora Park located off US 41 just north Of downtown St Petersburg! This major speech helped spark nationwide opposition against such bigotry which would ultimately lead to World War II! During this time period; both men held key positions within their respective municipalities! In 1931, following years of growth spurred by heavy industry interests throughout much of Pinellas County including shipbuilding along Tampa Bay – as well as large influxes from outofstate – Mayor Norris Waddell instituted zoning ordinances that restricted development near navigable waterways -in what would come to be known as "the green light" period for Pinellas County waterfront development! This decision resulted in many iconic buildings becoming outdated or abandoned such as Old Saint Nicholas Cathedral now used primarily for storage purposes; while imposing high costs on taxpayers whose valuable waterfront property lay fallow? Unfortunately; not all developers were constrained by these regulations subsequent to Waddell's death less than 3 years later at age 73% among those owning properties directly impacted thereby delaying redevelopment opportunities until after WWII?! A significant irony considering that Waddell himself had championed protectionism against out-oftown developers during his mayoral tenure? Additionally; construction began on what would become known simply as "Newport Pier" eventually reaching completion circa 1959 but never completed because state government funding ran short!? Some speculate that this quasi-official abandonment may have contributed significantly To The Decline & Demolition Of Downtown St Petersburg By 1966!!! It remains one questionable issue surroundingMayor Norris Waddell’s legacy
New Port Richey was founded in 1892 by Don A. White and his wife, Meta. The town was named for thePort of Richey on the bayous of Louisiana. The first post office was established in 1893. After a fire destroyed the town's only building in 1901, Don White donated land to build a new Post Office, which opened its doors in 1903. In 1907, New Port Richey became an incorporated city with a population of around 1,000 people. In 1935, Hurricane Allen struck Florida and caused extensive damage to New Port Richey and many other towns along the Gulf Coast. The city completed relief work within two weeks and helped provide food, water supplies, medical care and other essential needs for residents affected by the storm. After Hurricane Allen passed, New Port Richey experienced another boom period as businesses reopened and people started moving back into the community. However, during World War II (1939-1945), Newport Richey saw significant growth as it became home to Naval Air Station Plantation (NAS Plantation). NAS Plantation played a key role during World War II as it functioned as an airbase providing refueling services for Navy planes flying over Florida skies. As NAS Plantation transitioned from an aviation base to a naval sea station during the war years; many civilian jobs were transferred to NAS Plantation including: construction workers; engineers; architects; nurses; cooks; laundrymen; secretaries...The wartime boom ended when Japan entered World War II on December 7th 1941 without warning America or any other nations involved in submarine warfare about their intentions."
