New Port Richey is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up New Port Richey was first settled by Africans who worked on the sugar plantation along the Intracoastal Waterway. By 1860, most of what is now Inlet County had been acquired by the state of Florida and it became known as "Port Royal" because of its role as a commercial center for St. Augustine and Jacksonville. In 1892, John Dallek purchased land at present day Fort Myers Beach and began developing it into an establishement called Dallek's Bayou Park which included a casino and race track. This development attracted many entrepreneurs such as Jock Mahony and Willard Woodruff who developed other businesses in town including telemarketing, insurance, real estate and agricultural products until they were bought out by Standard Oil in 1925.
