New Port Richey is a town in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "New Port" comes from the sound that vessels make when they enter or leave port. The town began as a seasonal fishing village on Stilts Island in 1892. In 1896, New Port became an incorporated municipality and decided to become self-sufficient by establishing its own schools and fire departments. A post office was opened in 1903 and remained open until it closed in 1924 due to lack of mail service to the town. In 1925, New Port built a new community hall which served as the town's first courthouse and jail from 1926 until 1954 when it became part of the county courthouse system. On September 12, 1927, a hurricane hit Naples and resulted in devastating damage to NewPort including loss of homes, businesses and infrastructure; however little damage was done to NewPort because it had no city services like water or power that were disrupted during the storm. In 1931 voters approved annexation by Fort Myers which made New Port an official municipal subdivision with its own police force and budgeting system separate from Collier County government. The next year saw another Hurricane Olga pass through Collier County but no extensive damage occurred as a result; this event helped solidify NewPort's relationship with Collier County government while also giving residents more opportunities for social interaction outside of their local communities NMHP). In 1935-1936, Hurricane Danube hit Florida causing widespread flooding all over southern Florida including much damage to rural areas near Jacksonville but very little damage done to coastal communities such as Jacksonville where many businesses were destroyed or lost control of their plumbing systems because of saltwater contamination which followedDanube's path inlandward (the area now known as Belle Glade experienced some significant flooding after Danube although there were no major losses). After Danube passed away locals began planting vineyards near Point Breeze on Long Beach Peninsula overlooking Naples just south of Interstate 95) whence grapes are harvested today for wine production while tourism continues today along I-95 corridor along Pensacola Beach Road/Highways 59 & US 41A (known locally as “The Party Highway”). This region now includes much older waterfront neighborhoods established during Prohibition days such as West Boca Raton (now considered an enclave within Palm Coast) among others - these neighborhoods continue ashore even though most public streets have been replaced with higher density arterial roadway developments providing easy access to shopping malls etc., reflecting continuing popular cultural values associated with those pre-Prohibition eras

The town's first store, Griggs Hardware, opened in 1916. In 1922 the first hospital opened, and in 1933 the first doctor practicing medicine in New Port Richey was born.
