In 1948, the United States Air Force transferred 1,000 acres of land in New Smyrna Beach, Florida to the city of Daytona Beach. The land was donated by Dr. J. Franklin Gibbs who also served as president of the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce. The first air force installation on the property was the Morrell Field Air Station which opened in 1949. In 1961, construction began on what is now known as Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and it became operational in 1962. In 1974, bases were added at Tallahassee and Hurlburt Field which allowed for a total of 11 USAF installations within Daytona Beach County.
