The New Smyrna Beach, Florida Army Garrison was founded in 1917 as the original armory for the Third Infantry Brigade, Florida National Guard. It evolved into a military installation that housed both active and reserve components of the Florida Army National Guard. The Garrison is one of only a few installations in the United States with its own barracks, storehouse, and mess hall. Today, the Garrison oversees an area of more than 9 square miles and employs over 1,500 civilians and soldiers. One of the primary functions of the Garrison is to support military ceremonies and events throughout Southeast Florida. These events may include parades or other public appearances by members of the Armed Forces; collection of taxes; donation to local charities; or Boy Scout/ Girl Scout meetings. In addition to providing space for these activities, the Garrison also provides basic supplies such as food and clothing to troops stationed here. In recent years, Soldiers from units in Alabama have been deployed to help with hurricane relief efforts in Louisiana. In honor of World War II Veterans Day on November 11th, 2007, a gift shop was opened at Headquarters Annex located within Headquarters Building on Fort Myers Boulevard in New Smyrna Beach. This gift shop is open daily from 8am-4pm and features memorabilia related to military service during World War II including uniforms (including insignia), tools, vehicles etc., postcards from home country soldiers stationed abroad during WWII (Upper Canada), items made by locally owned businesses (such as toy truck models) donated by families living near Ft Myers Boulevard between I-95/Blvd Business Loop E & US 301W), artifacts excavated from Camp New Hope Cemetery located just east of Ft Myers Blvd., WWII memorabilia auctioned off by Command Sgt Major Michael J Sheppard at Battle Area Museum on October 2nd 2007

The New Smyrna Beach, Florida Army Garrison has deployed gift history dating back to World War II. In 1941, the military established an Army Post Exchange in the town to support the war effort. The exchange operated until 1945. From 1946-1948, the army placed a small store in the old Marine Barracks on Broadway. The store was destroyed by fire in 1948 and never reopened. In 1951, an enlisted man's club was established in New Smyrna Beach as part of the military health program. The club was closed in 1960 and never reopened. In 1962, a post office was established in New Smyrna Beach and it operated until 1966. In 1968, there was a large renovation project at the Marine Barracks which included new barracks, a gymnasium and canteen. From 1969-1972, an air conditioning unit was added to the barracks which served as headquarters for Commanding General 1st UFLA Division during Operation Neptune's Spear I Corps Operations (1973). This Annex also served as Headquarters for Battalion Commander 2nd FLA Infantry Brigade from 1977-1981 when it moved from its original location on First Avenue North to Fort Brooke Park east of I-4 near Pensacola Naval Air Station after being demilitarized from state control following their lease agreement with Federal Aviation Administration expired on July 30th 1981

New Smyrna Beach is known for its white sand beaches and seafood restaurants. The town was founded in 1917 by brothers Edwin and Arthur Halsey. It became an incorporated town in 1963.
The United States Army has been deploying gift items for many years now. This deployment history can be traced back to the Revolutionary War, when soldiers were ordered to bring along specific supplies and equipment. By World War I, Gifting had become quite popular within the military as it allowed Soldiers and their families some relief from combat stress. There were also campaigns set up in order for civilians to give backpacks, blankets, hats and other personal items to servicemen stationed overseas! After World War II ended there was significant growth in gifting within the military as servicemen felt pressure not only from combat stress but also from deploymentsosterity morale effects (euphemistically called “the GI Bill”). Finally, after much discussion between servicemen and their families (and sometimes bureaucrats) gifting became widespread throughout all branches of the military by 1975!
