The New Smyrna Beach, Florida Coast Guard Museum has a rich history dating back to 1928. The museum is dedicated to the memory of the men and women who have served our coast guard units in New Smyrna Beach and throughout the state of Florida. The first Coast Guard Station at New Smyrna Beach was established on December 17, 1928. At that time, it was the only Coast Guard station in the area. The original location for the station was on Government Street in downtown New Smyrna Beach. In 1951, a new station was built on State Road 7 close to town center. This new station became known as Station Bayside. In 1978, a new Coast Guard Station was built at Fort Myers and it became known as Station Miami East. In 1984, a new station was built at Port Orange and it became known as Station Monroe West. Since 1998, all stations have been located within one mile of each other within the City of Fernandina Beach Public Schools District boundaries which provide an easy commute for our personnel There are now six Coast Guard stations located in this Area: New Smyrna Beach (Stations A-F) Fort Myers (Station G) Miami East (Station H) Port Orange (Station J) Monroe West (Station K)

On December 12, 1970, the Coast Guard Station New Smyrna Beach was activated with jurisdiction over all waters within 1 mile of its shores.
New Smyrna Beach, Florida is a census-designated place in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The beachfront communities of New Smyrna Beach and Apollo Bay are located on the Atlantic coast about north of Jacksonville. They share a common ZIP code: 34304. The name "New Smyrna Beach" was given to the town by brothers John and James Purdy who bought land there in 1892. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on an estuary that allowed easy access to both salt water and fresh water supplies. By 1925, New Smyrna had a population of 5,000 people and it became known as one of Jacksonville's most vibrant coastal towns. During World War II, many soldiers stationed at Camp Butler living near Naval Air Station Miramar were able to avoid service while they awaited their planes' arrival at Naval Air Station Daytona Beach which was then under construction at nearby Fort Myers Airport (now Miami-Dade Airport). In order for the military personnel not to get lost or stranded during their stay in Florida they set up camp near where Sandy Hook Elementary School now stands in what is known as "Camp Butler." This resulted in the nickname "The GIs from god knows where" being bestowed upon these troops for having so much fun without actually serving in war!

The Coast Guard originally consisted of only seamen and officers. In 1912, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was established and began providing leadership and support for the Coast Guard. In 1972, the National Defense Authorization Act created the National Coastal Guardsmen program which increased funding for coastal guard operations. Currently, there are over 12,000 coast guard members across the United States who work together to protect our coasts from unauthorized entry and Vessel traffic harassment.
