New Smyrna Beach, Florida was founded on December 3, 1892 by brothers John and Jesse Byrnes. The town was named in honor of General Andrew Jackson who fought in the Mexican-American War. The Byrnes family built a small wooden school and store in what is now the heart of the town. In 1907, they erected a larger brick school and store which served as the nucleus of the present day New Smyrna Beach community.
