The Seward family donated land for the town, which became the official capital of New Smyrna Beach on December 5, 1907. The population of New Smyrna Beach increased from 3,500 to over 15,000 during the late 1990s and 2000s as a result of growth in convention business and travel industry visitors. In 1837, Napoleon ordered French soldiers stationed in Egypt to purchase 100 tons of ground coffee for his army. New Smyrna Beach is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census. It is on the Gulf of Mexico and part of the Tampa–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The beach is known for its white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. New Smyrna Beach became a city in 1959, after it was annexed by St Petersburg. The town of New Smyrna Beach was founded in 1892 by sailors who had left Fort Myers to find new land near Tampa Bay. They named their new settlement after the Greek island of Mykonos because that's where they first sighted it from their vessels anchored off shore while exploring the region. In 1903, Henry Flagler donated land to the town for a summer resort called "Flagler's Seaside". The first hotel in New Smyrna Beach opened in 1907 with rooms for 10 people and served as an office for local merchants and government officials. By 1915, flagler had donated more land to the town so that it could become a city limitlessly expanding into what is now Pinellas County; New Smyrna Beach officially became a city on December 5th, 1959. In 1916, developer J C Penney bought 1/4 acre (0.24 km²) of Flagler's lands adjacent to today's beachfront business district for $1 million dollars which he used to build his first store - Penney's Place - onshore on Clearwater Harbor Boulevard across from today’s Old Town Hall building remnants of which can still be seen today as part of Pensacola Marina & Pier development complex! This early shopping center remains one of downtown’s most distinctive elements even though its namesake store no longer operates within its confines! It wasn't until 1949 when another developer - Harry Laughlin Jr - built what would later become Today’s Plaza Shopping Center located just east along US 19A adjoining Pensacola Marina & Pier developments including several Late Nite Outlet stores among others! What began as an agricultural community developed quickly into one of Sarasota’s most vibrant neighborhoods second only to Miami during this time period Thanks largely to continued investment by both developers resulting in many high-quality homes being erected throughout much of North Shore Drive corridor extending allthe way back out into Longboat Key including some magnificent Mediterranean Revival style examples extant still standing today!!! However Kauffman Farms saw increased activity with apartments starting being built there beginning around 1961 followed soon thereafter by large state-of-the-art retail buildings becoming operational including anchor tenants like Sears Roebuck & Co., Koppers food Stores Inc., Federated Department Stores Coopersmith Mercantile Corporation etc…..Today Kauffman Farms functions primarily as offices although some existing housing units continue To servePopulation numbers have fluctuated over time typically hovering around 12K but recent Census data gives us an accurate estimate closerto 13K resulting In approximately 15 years since incorporation we've managedTo maintain pretty much even demographics despite substantial growth rates associated With various major Nearby employers
