The first white settlement in New Smyrna Beach, Florida was made by James A. Butler on December 14th, 1841. He and his family founded the town of New Smyrna Beach on a tract of land that he had purchased from the Seminole Tribe of Indians. The town was named for the natural harbor and beach located at the mouth of River Donelson. The town quickly grew into a small community with only about seventy-five residents when it was incorporated as a municipality on January 2nd, 1853. New Smyrna Beach experienced important moments during its early years. On November 8th, 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell’s forces burned down the local courthouse and many other buildings in what is now known as “The Day of Infamy”. This event helped toDaylight the importance of democracy in America and showed people that they could not rely upon their government to help them protect their interests. Two years later, on October 12th, 1867, Mayor John Ahern dedicated a new public works building which became home to the city hall and all municipal services. On February 1st, 1898, New Smyrna Beach became part of Jacksonville County after being organized by state legislators as one of five towns within Jacksonville County (along with St Augustine, Dunedin/St Petersburg/Clearwater Hills/Boca Raton), pursuant to act No. 322 of February 6th,. The population for New Smyrna Beach had grown rapidly since incorporation so much so that by 1900 there were over two thousand residents living in the town proper and another three hundred residents living in surrounding rural areas including St Johns Bayou and Indian Harbour Counties
