In 1948, the first gourmet coffee shop opened in town and it was called The Coffee Shop Gourmet Coffee. It was run by John Fenton and his wife Betty. In the early 1990s, Joe's Café started serving gourmet coffee. It was founded by Joe Garofalo and his wife Lisa. Their restaurant served a variety of drinks, like espresso, latte macchiato, cappuccino, iced tea and so on. Joe's Cafe is still in operation today as one of the most popular gourmet coffee stores in town. Today there are many different types of gourmet coffee shops all over America and Europe that serve amazing cup of java! New Smyrna Beach is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on December 3, 1922 by Greek immigrants as New Smyrna Beach Plantation and named after their ancestral home of Myrina in Crete. The original intent of the founders was to create an agricultural fishing village on Stonington Key Peninsula that would be accessible only by boat from the mainland; however, this never came to fruition and the area became known for its beachfront hotels and casinos starting in the late 1920s. The first hotel opened in 1925 and it quickly became one of America's most popular tourist destinations with its beautiful white sand beaches, clear water estuaries, lush gardens, friendly locals and great food choices. In 1933 New Smyrna Beach became a city under statehood when it ratified a charter giving it political representation within Volusia County. In 1959 President John F Kennedy traveled to Miami for a campaign rally which took place at Blue Water Resort & Casino on Collins Avenue just south of I-95 exit 17A/Orlando International Airport. That same year new mayor Jerry West redesigned New Smyrna Beach's downtown renamed Plaza Live! After his victory over Barry Goldwateroothan October 5th 1961 through November 2nd 1961 during Florida gubernatorial election cycle; Mayor West re-named all streets Commons Drive honoring then Governor Goldwateroothan who had been his predecessor as Mayor of New Smyrna Beach City Hall Annex Building north side 3rd floor former jail used for storage Midtown Pizza Store until closed down May 1st 1975 now houses Newsmax TV Headquarters English Speaking Division Phone: 407-868-6000 On January 11th 1973 fire destroyed much of Center Street near Presentation Church due to arson by uniformed officers while fireworks were being set off by participating teenagers inside Centre Street Baptist Church located across street from Fire Station #2 which is also now property owner’s house next door to building where apartments once were located before demolition began
New Smyrna Beach was founded in 1868 by Ishmael Hawkins and his wife, Emma. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its ability to provide goods and services necessary for the local economy. The town's first school was built in 1871, and the first post office opened in 1872. In 1903, New Smyrna Beach incorporated as a city. Because of its location at the mouth of the Florida Keys, New Smyrna Beach quickly became known as one of America's most important shipping ports.During World War II, New Smyrna Beach helped support American forces by providing supplies and housing for troops stationed in the area. After the war, New Smyrna Boulevard was renamed after General James E. Gavin, Jr., who served as Mayor of New Smyrna Beach from 1949 to 1951.In 1973, Hurricane Agnes struck Florida causing widespread damage across many parts of the state. Many homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair, including those located in what is now downtown New Smyrna Beach. Despite this setback, New Smyrna beach continued to grow during that year as businesses reopened and new residents moved into the community. By 1978, almost all evidence of destruction had been erased from downtown with only a few reminders remaining such as some pre-war buildings still standing along Water Street
