The New Smyrna Beach, Florida National Guard has been a part of the community since its creation in 1949. The guard is made up of soldiers and civilians who are drafted by their local county to serve in the military or protect their community. The Guard was originally known as the Volunteer Fire Department and it was changed to the National Guard in 1949. In 1962, the Guard was merged with the Sheriff’s Department and now operates as a single entity. The National Guardsmen from New Smyrna Beach have served our country for over fifty years and they continue to make an impact on our community. Their service includes roles such as providing security at events such as Memorial Day festivities or aiding during Hurricane Irma. In 2017, the New Smyrna Beach National Guard delivered more than 5,000 items to local households in need through Purse For Relief. This year, they will be working together with Operation Christmas Child to support children in North Korea through donations of toys and literacy materials. National Guardsmen from across America come together every Christmas season to celebrate with family and friends. This year’s event is being held on December 14th at Ft Myer Park in Arlington Virginia where members of both branches of the military will gather together for a festive day filled with food, fun, laughter and much-needed support during this time of year.

It was created on August 25, 1947 through the National Security Act of 1947 and it is composed of all reserve components of the regular Army and Navy as well as airmen and Coast Guard members. The guard consists of about one million men and women who are organized into battalions, companies, brigades, regiments, divisions, corps and agencies. The mission of the national guard is to provide defense against hostilities within the United States or abroad; to provide law enforcement services; to perform other functions as assigned by Congress. The guardsmen are also available for duty in support of homeland security tasks such as guarding installations such as airports or seaports; providing protection for political leaders during elections or other events; performing military exercises off US soil; conducting humanitarian aid operations; or serving in any other capacity authorized by Congress.

New Smyrna Beach, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Monroe County. The population was 12,912 at the 2010 census. The town is home to two colleges and several businesses, including an amusement park and a shopping mall. As one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Gulf Coast, New Smyrna Beach has been called "The Sun Belt's Most Popular Place to Live." The first humans to live in what is now New Smyrna Beach were Native American traders who traveled along the coast during the 16th century. In 1821, James W. Baldwin founded Baldwin Motors Company in New Smyrna Beach and began manufacturing cars and other vehicles here. By 1925, Baldwin had become one of America's largest automobile manufacturers. In 1905, John Fenton purchased land at present-day Broadway between 2nd Street and 3rd Avenue in what is now part of New Smyrna Beach for $5 per acre (the base price for land then). He named his new development "Fentonville" after himself and his brother-in-law Donald Fenton Sr., who platted it out into streetscape blocks that still exist today. John Fenton sold most of his holdings in Fentonville to various developers over the years but left behind a small tract that became known as "The Heights". It bordered 3rd Avenue south; 4th Avenue north; Broadwalk east; Spanish Bayou west; and State Road 508 north. This property served as much as a subdivision boundary as it did a community center and school district headquarters for all of unincorporated Monroe County until 1974 when its boundaries were changed by county commissioners under Florida statehood legislation enacted by then Governor Reubens Jones Jr.. In 1957, Jerald Cushing opened Cushing's Department Store at present-day Broadway/State Road 508 which became one of Jacksonville's first major retailers before closing its doors in 1990 due to heavy competition from Walmart across Interstate 95 from Jacksonville proper. At some point during this time period another store - Big Tex's - also opened up on Veterans Boulevard across from Fort Myers Naval Base next door (now known as LPB Marine). It wasn't until 1978 when plans were put forth by developer Bob Kappler to demolish everything within The Heights - which would have included The Department Store - create high ground overlookingBroadwalk/State Road 508 where he could build an amusement park with rides such as Six Flags Over Texas (now IMAX), carnival games, waterparks etcetera based on designs he had developed while working on similar projects around this time throughout Southwest Florida... however these plans never came through due to financial reasons related primarily to nearby shopping malls becoming increasingly more popular than theme parks at that time... Kappler built only one amusement park project: Typhoon Lagoon which was completed in 1984 without ever opening its gates! Today nearly every inch of this forty acre complex ($10 million spent) remains undeveloped despite numerous complaints from local residents about increasing noise levels, general decay & neglect... Typhoon Lagoon billed itself as being "the biggest waterpark on Earth!" However because it used shallow wells rather than deep ones used for oil exploration or hosting large events like Super Bowls or WrestleMansions etc., their guests often end up wetting their clothes downstream! In short: no big deal really... until you visit! On December 1st 1959 Hurricane Ike made landfall near Pensacola Island making landfall just northeast of Cape St Lucie Sound with winds speeds reaching 133 mph!!! Approximate damage done totals $135 million INCLUDING TOWARDENS TO STRUCTURES!!!!!!
