Tactical coffee history in New Smyrna Beach, Florida began in the early 1920s when Spanish military officer Manuel Martinez started importing Brazilian coffee beans to fuel his troops. Martinez' business grew and he purchased a small warehouse on Third Street in 1922. He renamed the business "Café de la Esperanza" (Hope Coffee) and continued to sell coffee until his death in 1933. His son, Roberto Martinez, continued the family-owned business until it was sold to J.B. Lippincott Enterprises in 1984. Lippincott first imported Brazilian coffee from Brazil as part of their marketing strategy for the Palm Beach County area during World War II. They also began selling Colombian beans which became popular after the war ended. The Martinez family continued to operate Café de la Esperanza until 1984 when it was sold to JB Lippincott Enterprises Incorporated. At that time, café de la Esperanza became one of Jacksonville's oldest continuously operating businesses with over 125 years of history!

In the early 1800s, coffee beans were brought from Africa and roasted in small roasting houses near Naples, Italy. Coffee was first sold as a commodity in New Smyrna Beach in 1847. The first café on the scene opened in 1851. In 1865, George Fenton opened the first grocery store in town and soon became one of the most important merchants in the area. By the late 1870s, coffee had become an important part of local society and was used to fuel local businesses. In 1892, a new coffee house called The Gilded Cage replaced The Burr-O-Grinders as the town's leading nightspot. In 1896, a post office was built at 5 N State Road 509 and Prohibition closed it down in 1920 due to its high demand for caffeine during that time period. By 1925, New Smyrna Beach had become an industrial center with many large plantations working along its coast. Coffee production stopped around World War II but resumed after 1945 when big plantation owners began buying back their own land and growing other crops instead of importing beans from Africa again.

In 1915, New Smyrna Beach became a municipally-sponsored beach town with its own government and schools. During World War II, New Smyrna Beach was one of several communities in southeastern Florida closed to military personnel for fear that they would provide vital intelligence to Nazi Germany. After the war, New Smyrna Beach underwent rapid growth as a resort town with large hotels and apartment complexes built along both its seafront and downtown streets. Today, much of the original infrastructure remains well into the 21st century; such as The Key Arena which opened in 1959 as one of first major shopping centers in northeastern Florida and still hosts minor events today including karate tournaments and rock concerts.
New Smyrna Beach was founded on December 1, 1892 by the citizens of Jacksonville, Florida. The town was named after Captain John F. Smyrna and his family who donated land to the community. The first store in New Smyrna Beach was built by J.B. Haley and operated for a short time before being closed down. A post office was established in 1893 and remained open until 1935. The first school in New Smyrna Beach was opened in 1895 by Mrs. Lizzie Eagan and held classes from kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1907, the first fire department in Jacksonville was organized and its members were purchased from Mrs. Elizabeth Cawley of Belle Isle Township for $100 each. The first Church of God (Christ) service took place on December 3, 1912 at the home of Revs Walter Ackerstaller and Bessie Best with Rev Wm Hennessey preaching the sermon entitled "A Presentation of Jesus Christ." In 1915, Reverend Harry Timpson came to New Smyrna Beach from Stonington, Connecticut to serve as pastor for one year until he moved to Pensacola, Florida where he served from 1916 until his death in 1934; during his tenure, New Smyrna beach had its first library which opened on December 16th 1916/. In 1925-1926 new homes were constructed along Gulf Boulevard including one known as cottage number 7 which is still standing today at 501 Gulf Boulevard NE; this home is representative of many early development homes that lined Gulf Boulevard North throughout most of the 20th century-. In 1933-1934 a new hospital called Doctors Hospital opened just north of downtown Jacksonville on Union Street with Drs William McNamara and James McDonnell serving as head medical staff followed by Drs James Meeks who became head physician/CEO in1988-. On January 8th 1954 Mayor Claude Pepper made an announcement that Myrtle Beach had selected Jacksonville as their site for a Naval airbase giving rise to speculation that Jacksonville would become known as " naval city". This led to plans for significant revitalization efforts taking place throughout downtown including demolition or reconstruction of older buildings along Gulf Boulevard North while also creating new developments such as Turtle Bayou Park which still stands today at 501 Gulf Boulevard NE corner Federal Highway
