The military has always been a part of Niceville, Florida. The first American soldiers arrived in the area in 1821. The town was named for Jean-Baptiste de la Nouvelle-Orléans, Duke of Orléans. The army conducted its first patrols and raids in this area during the Seminole Wars. In 1862, the Confederate Army invaded Florida and occupiedNiceville. General Braggs decided to move his army through the small town to take on Union General Nathaniel Banks at Gaines Mill. The townspeople defended themselves with what they could muster and were able to repel the Confederate attack. The United StatesArmy garrisoned Niceville until 1898 when it left for Cuba to fight Spanish forces. After the war, the USArmy returned to Niceville and used it as a training ground for new officers and enlisted men. In 1951, following the Korean War, USArmy First Lieutenant Robert Ewell established himself as commander of Fort Myers Garrison here on base from which he conducted operations throughout South Korea until his death in 1971.* This fortification is now open to visitors who can tour it on a guided tour** * thanks to Robert Ewell's initiative, Fort Myers Garrison is now an open museum that houses artifacts from both World War II and Korea **

Niceville is a census-designated place in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. Niceville is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan statistical area. The town began as a post office on February 14, 1892, named for Admiral Novellus Hickey who had commanded a squadron that helped suppress Seminole Indian resistance in Florida during the American Civil War. The first white settler was John A. Armstrong who arrived in 1894. By 1899 there were 10 houses and 3 businesses in the town center with a population of twenty-six people. The townsite was platted by J.C Tudor and Wm Sells with help from Colonel George Walton III of Polk County to provide an agricultural community for citrus growers near Daytona Beach and Fort Myers before they built their own railroad system to bring fruit and other crops to market. In 1907, Niceville incorporated as a city under the jurisdiction of Volusia County but kept its post office designation until 1959 when it changed to its current name after Governor Claude Rains signed legislation creating Brevard County which included Niceville within its boundaries. The downtown core of Niceville contains two blocks of brick buildings developed between 1912 and 1916 by Harry Kayser (1857-1927), founder of Kayser's Candies company which later became Allied Biscuits company; most notable are 417 E Main Street (the original store front) where he opened his flagship store until 1922 when it burned down; Kayser House now occupied by Headquarters & Records store adjacent on 417 E Main St.; also significant is Fine Arts Building located at 501 Monroe Ave., completed 1915 replacing an earlier structure erected in 1893 which served as courthouse prior to that; this brick building has been restored several times including being featured on the cover of "Florida Architecture" volume VI issue #2 published in 1978 On October 1st 1906 Hurricane Isabel passed through central Florida leaving behind high waves along much of the coast includingNiceville Island resulting in extensive damage with some homes destroyed or damaged beyond repair; following exposure as television footage depicted damages done during Hurricane Ivan many local business owners decided to rebuild rather than simply rebuild && follow same path as Ivan; this occurred despite lack of available funding either from state or federal governments&& throughout history hurricane damage awards have been almost always dwarfed by overall reconstruction spending&& In 1957 Mayor Maurice Janken obtained authorization from Volusia County commissioners for annexation into Brevard County providing limited services such as tax assessor and library functions not previously provided within City limits&& nicevilles annexation remains controversial due primarily to lack thereof evidence suggests annexed areas have generally fared better economically than unannexed portions
Niceville was founded in 1895 by a group of businessmen led by J.C. Whitney, who named it after the town of Nice, France. The town had been abandoned when the railroad passed through the area and Whitney decided to revive it as a community that would be accessible to people from all over the Florida peninsula. The first settlers were farmers and their families who started farming around 1900. By 1930, Niceville had a population of about 2,000 people and was home to several stores, schools, and businesses. The post office opened in 1924 and soon became one of the largest in the area. In 1932, Niceville annexed what is now Seminole County; this addition made it one of the larger communities in Florida. In 1941, during World War II, Niceville was hit hard by the military draft; many women joined the war effort and many men left for work outside of town. The population dropped significantly during World War II and never recovered until after the war ended in 1945. During postwar years, Niceville boomed with development; numerous new homes were built along University Boulevard and elsewhere throughout town while industry moved into new buildings on West Floridian Avenue. In 1970-71, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much ofNiceville including most of its business district; however, despite this loss many residents chose to return to their rebuilt community even though some adjustment period may have been necessary for fear that future hurricanes might damage or destroy more important infrastructure such as schools or hospitals. In 2000-01 Hurricane Mitch caused significant damage but no injuries reported; following that storm there was an increase in property values which helped contribute to stability in Niceville since then
