Niceville is a city in Brevard County, Florida, located on the eastern side of the Everglades. As of the 2010 census, its population was 606. The city is named after French general and navy officer Pierre-Charles de La Motte-Notre Dame. Niceville is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area. The first people to live in Niceville were the Timucua Indians who were displaced by European settlers in 1835. Niceville was founded on November 10, 1887 by J.P. Morgan and his partners George Ransom and Edward Hines as a small farming community called "Norfolk." On July 1, 1907, it became a city with a population of 2,534 residents according to the 1910 census. In 1916 Mayor Averill Harriman incorporated Niceville as a City Park District with limits of . By virtue of this incorporation and its place within City Limits it became subject to all applicable State Water Pollution Control Regulations then in effect for cities located within municipally-created parks district boundaries It should be noted that during most of its early history Niceville was not only an unincorporated village but also had its own mayor and council which met monthly at various locations throughout the park until 1956 when consolidation into City Limits occurred. In 1961 the Independent School District No 5 took over control of local public schools from the City Park District effective January 1st through December 31st inclusive; however districts remain separate entity with their own governing boards and officers In 1984 Mayor Bob Sikes announced that he would no longer pursue annexation into Broward County because many residents there wanted nothing to do with aldermen who viewed themselves more as "civic boosters" than elected officials However annexation did occur on October 16th 1986 when Niceville annexed Plantation Estates east of US-1A just south of I-95
