Niceville is a small town located in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Niceville is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Niceville was founded in 1884 by John Hannon and his family as a plantation on the banks of the St Johns River. Niceville became an important agricultural community until it lost its identity when Orange County was established in 1907. It reverted to its original name of Niceville after World War II when development moved into the town from nearby Sanford. The first post office opened in 1885 and closed in 1929. The present post office building was built in 1951 and replaced an earlier structure that had been used for district court proceedings since 1892. The old courthouse served as a movie theater until 1980 and also housed a library from 1957 to 1984 before being torn down to make way for new development. In 1990, Niceville organized itself as a village and annexed other villages within its boundaries including Sanford, Kissimmee, Winter Garden, Belle Glade and Altamonte Springs while retaining its own government services such as fire protection, police force and school district. In 2000, the Village voted to secede from Pasco County due to disagreements over land use policies with Seminole County which dominates much of central-west Pasco County (including Sanford). A referendum won by 96% against secession yielded incorporation into Seminole County on December 14th 2002 with both villages retaining their own governments except for sharing law enforcement responsibilities; however fire protection services were jointly managed under one unified command until 2005 when separate departments were set up within each municipality again pending annexation into Seminole County should that happen again (it did not). Niceville is a city located in central Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. It was founded by settlers in 1892 and named for Captain Nicholas Nice, who explored the area. The city has grown rapidly over the years, and now occupies a total area of 137 square miles (361 km2). The population of Niceville was 713,711 as of 2010 census.
