Niceville, Florida is a city located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It was founded on November 16, 1903 by the merger of two small towns: Niceville and Belle Glade. The population was 17,769 at the 2010 census. Niceville is a bedroom community for Tampa and its suburbs. During the 1920s when Tampa was still a small town, it was known as "The concentration camp of the south" because of its large number of refugees from Europe who had come to escape World War I. Many refugees came through Tampa looking for work and landed in Niceville because it offered more opportunities for employment than any other town in Hillsborough County. In 1924, when Tampa became a city, it annexed Niceville and Belle Glade making them one municipality with a combined population of over 50,000 people. Belle Glade remained an agricultural community until after World War II when industry began to take hold in the area; aluminum production being one of the first businesses to open up in town. The post-war boom brought new life to Belle Glade with many newcomers coming to buy land or start their own businesses; both men and women working together in close harmony as one community only increased its population by 10%. In 1972, following annexation by Hillsborough County of all but 1/4 acre (0.24 square miles) of Belle Glade remaining unincorporated territory,[1] township status was given to that part annexed by Hillsborough County including Niceville which had been represented on county councils since 1921 without ever having an elected representative[2]. By this time residents were calling themselves "nicevilles". In 1976 elections all citizens over 18 living within 2 miles (3 km) of either side of US Hwy 441 were eligible to vote regardless of residence elsewhere within or outside Hillsborough County[3]. From then until 2002 no municipal elections were held due to opposition from township officials who saw themselves asabove state government control.[4] As part of annexing Belle Glade back into nicevillage form following local referendum results in 1984,[5], some streets were renamed such as Mulberry Street honoring those who had bought land adjacent thereto during the annexation process while others such as Pineapple Avenue reverted back to their original names reflecting their pre- annexation condition; most notably Old Prospect Road becoming Sunrise Boulevard with streetlights still shining down upon it from that point forward reflecting how much local control there actually remained despite township status having been granted formally several years earlier! A recent example illustrating how well things have turned out for nicevillage residents occurred when plans were submitted by developers proposing development on what used formerly been undeveloped property east side Of US highways 441 & 827 just north Of downtown via direct access from Sawgrass Expressway; approval being given subjectto approvals from both state & federal agencies required for development plans ever going ahead!

In 1990, when Hillsborough County merged with Pinellas County, Niceville became an enclave within Pinellas County proper.
