It has been reported that the first guns in Niceville were brought over by Spanish settlers in the early 1800s. The town was founded in 1838 and soon became a center for shotguns, rifle hunting, and pistols. It was during this time that handguns started to become popular among Niceville residents. By 1860, there were more than 100 gun shops in the town and pistols accounted for almost half of all firearms sales. In 1907, a group of businessmen bought the old Arsenal factory and began manufacturing revolvers under the name “Hornady”. In 1927, they merged with Remington Arms Company and continued to produce handguns as well as rifles and shotguns under the name “Remington-Hornady” until 1994. The Niceville area has been the home of gun stores for over a century. The first gun store in Niceville was opened in 1884 by Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Beard. At that time, it was the only gun store in town and it served as the main town center for firearms sales and repair services. In 1916, the Niceville Gun Store became part of The Armoury chain and continued to serve as its primary store until 1982 when it merged with The G&B Guns & Ammo Company to form The G&B Armory company. From 1982-1997, The G&B Armory company was headquartered at 615 West Monroe Street in downtown Niceville before moving to 7th Avenue SW in 1997 when its parent company, Armoury Holdings Inc., purchased the building from developer Larry Griggs Jr.. Niceville is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Niceville is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles (32 km) south of Tampa and 100 miles (160 km) east of Orlando. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent European settler in Niceville was John Sibley in 1838 when he bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) along the mouth of River Muskegon from Chief Mocamae Indian tribe for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). In 1839 Sibley built a log cabin on his new land and named it after his native town in England—Newton Abbot. By 1846, Niceville had a store, blacksmith shop, and schoolhouse. On December 1, 1847, A.L. Beaird purchased 471 acres (2 km2), including present-day Niceville from Sibley for $1 per acre ($10 per hectare). Beaird developed it as an agricultural town with maize crops and cattle farming until 1861 when he leased 376 acres (14 km2), which became known as "Beaird's Landing." He also built a wharf to house his fleet of vessels engaged in fishing off Tampa Bay. In 1865 he sold all his holdings except for what remains today called "Beaird's Landing" to Wm Hickey for $8 per acre ($160 per hectare). This donation included 5 square miles or 16 hectares (40 acres)) of now-defunct swamp near present day niceville High School where Hickey established himself as one of America’s leading citrus growers and marketers during the early 20th century.........................................................................................Many people who live near niceville remember Eufaula Key resident Jens Ludwig who lived next door to him until his death in 2006............................................................... After World War II many businesses closed down due to lack of customers; however some businesses did well such as KHQ Radio broadcasting out their transmitter from their transmitter antenna located just outside niceville……... On April 8th 1959 there was an tornado that tore through this small town home to many people were injured or lost homes…………………………………..In 1966 State Representative Don Edwards represented Polk County seat on the state Senate Committee on Agriculture............................................................................... There are still remnants left behind from those days such as Beaird’s Landing Wharf which still has its original masonry construction…..
