Niceville is a town in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa Bay–St Petersburg–Pensacola metropolitan area. The first white person to set foot in Niceville was James Wofford on November 13th, 1855 while exploring the area for a new plantation he had just purchased from Indians. He named his plantation "Wofford's Creek". By 1863, most of what is now Niceville had been platted and developed as a resort town by J.D. Lumber Co., heirs of John Doolittle and others who acquired large tracts of land in South Florida during the Seminole Wars and Reconstruction period. Lumber Company surveyor George Coker filed a plat of what would become Niceville on October 7th, 1868 with Hernando Ponce de Leon as surveyor-in-chief and Elisha Bogue as engineer. The original name proposed for this location was "Bogue's Plantation." In 1870, when it became apparent that some residents were not following annexation plans submitted by annexation proponents within their own townships (e.g., Waterloo in Hillsborough County), leaders of both Niceville and Waterloo decided to form a Provisional Municipality which would have its own government with specific powers relating to taxation, education, fire protection (initially an emergency power), streetlights etc.. However due to disagreements over wool prices between these two municipalities (and later among other towns within the provisional municipality) the authority transferred from Niceville to Waterloo on December 2nd 1870 by order of Mayor Edward Sangerstrom; however publication of this order did not eventuate until after municipal incorporation on January 3rd 1871 under new name: "Niceville Provisional Municipality" with boundaries identical to those currently embraced by present day Collier County." A post office called New Orleans was established in 1872 at Broadway and US Highway 41 but discontinued operations in 1876 because mail reached Tampa more quickly through St Petersburg then through New Orleans; however no attempt has been made to reopen it since then! In 1886 Jacksonville developer Jno Fenton bought much improved land east side of US Highway 441 about 8 miles north-northeast of present day Niceville for $2 million which included all or parts of present day downtown Jacksonville including what are now Loop 410/Research Boulevard/Seminole Avenue/Curtiss Boulevard NE & I-95 exit #4A . This parcel became known as Northwest Corner Field where development continued intermittently until planned demolition & replacement of older nicevillians Comprehensive Plan services began full steam ahead Nov 2006 when community wide input resulted in revised Comprehensive Plan master plan
