The Niceville National Guard was organized on November 12, 1923. The original unit consisted of 6 men and was called the "Niceville Rifles." The regiment was redesignated as the "National Guardsmen of Florida" on September 1, 1946. On January 25, 1959, the National Guardsmen of Florida were again redesignated as the "Florida National Guard" effective February 15.
Niceville is a census-designated place in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Niceville is located on State Road 892 east of Jacksonville and north of St Johns River. The town was founded in 1888 by J.D. Bigham and C.F Townsend as a rural community called Oakdale on Bulls Bayou east of Jacksonville. It was named for General John Fenton who had been aide to Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War and whose grandson became mayor in 1903. The name change followed annexation by Jacksonville in 1907 which made Niceville an incorporated city with its own government and streetlights; it retained its rural character until 1959 when all but one street within the city limits were renamed after military or naval officers or other significant figures from Duval County (the exception being Veterans Boulevard which remains unofficially known as "Jacksonville Boulevard" to this day). Niceville's rich history has been documented by several books including: "The Best Place to Live", "The History of Duval County" and "A History of Jacksonville". In 1892, trade mark lawyer Perry Aiken opened his law office in what is now the downtown Business District; he would remain active there until his death in 1951. Niceville also became home to two major cotton plantations – Pickens & Co.'s White Clay Plantation (now part of Polk County) and Waddell & McMullen's Blue Clay Plantation dating back to 1885 – making it one of the most diverse cities in Florida at that time Comprehensive Plan No 4 developed forDuval County included plans for annexing numerous small agricultural villages like Nicevilie without their consent thereby paving way for large industrial developments such as Jacksons Mills textile mill, later Pepsi-Cola bottling plant, AllisChalmers fertilizer plant etc.; however all planning petered out due to political instability caused by World War II economic sanctions against Axis countries like Germany while large numbers Floridians volunteered for military service; many residents left town during that time period looking for better opportunities elsewhere especially since Dearborn Heights annexed into Jacksonville years later making Niceville effectively irrelevant economically speaking although some businesses did manage to keep going thanks to rebranding efforts over the years In 1949, entrepreneur Ben Barnes started selling ice cream from a truck parked on Main Street corner with Old Hickory Boulevard just outside present day Walmart; Barnes would go onto open more than 60 stores across Florida alone before his death in 2007 aged 95 leaving behind an empire spanning multiple states along with a lasting legacy Thanks largely to Walton family ownership Walmart closed down most original Barnes stores around 2005-2006 but reopened them under new management within a few months at least one still remains open today providing much needed employment opportunity On July 2nd 1912 local boy Harry Bates set up shop selling paint brushes out front on Monroe Street corner Park Avenue near present day University Hospital outlet mall becoming first business ever established within present day boundaries soon afterwards he leased space upstairs from Mrs Beecham’s grocery store where he operated Defendant’s Hardware & Paint Store until 1916 when he built himself a building next door (now Goodwill Industries) which served as his storefront until his death pining young Harry Bates died age 10 days after setting up shop cancer ridden at age only 24 not long after starting sales
