The town was founded by Captain John Troup after he sold land to the government for $1,000. Niceville's first post office opened in 1853 and its first store was built in 1857. The Panic of 1907 caused many businesses to close their doors throughout Duval County as investors went into panic mode due to low prices for goods exported from America. Notable citizens such as J P Morgan turned to Niceville for support during this time as there were no other cities or towns with similar resources that could offer help during the economic downturn. When things began to improve in 1908 however, Mayor A C Hargrave declared that Niceville should rename itself "New Orleans" after the city's founder which finally happened on July 1st of that year with all residents reporting back home that they changed their names accordingly! In 1912-1913 Pleasant Grove Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church) was founded which would become one of the most influential religious institutions in the area until 1950 when it merged with another local church which would later become Gainesville Baptist Church! In 1930-1931 a new water tower called "Hollywood" was built which remains standing today! In 1935-1936 an addition called "The Gables" was built across from Main Street and still stands today! During World War II like most American towns not much happened but thanks to donations from people like Franklin D Roosevelt who touredNiceville while being President he helped fund many projects within our small community such as building playgrounds for children and creating more than 10 fireplaces within our high school! After the war ended however some growth did occur such as increasing employment opportunities within our community thanks to US military construction projects which continued until 1971 when all federal troops left Duval County!!! After nearly 50 years without any major changes what began as a small town quickly evolved into one ofDuvalCounty’s most vibrant communities full of culture and history - now home to over 1,710 residents enjoying easy access to public transportation and top cultural attractions like Hollywood Boulevard & Lake Pontchartrain Island

In 1912, the CDP was moved from its original location on the Gulf of Mexico to what is now the towns of Belleair and Plantation Beach on Longboat Key Island. In 1928, Niceville incorporated as a city under the name of Jacksonville. In 1941, during World War II, Jacksonville was hit with an atomic bomb attack which caused extensive damage to the cityscape and killed over 100 people.
