The Coast Guard was founded in 1917, and has served the community of North Lauderdale for over 100 years. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect life and property on the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, and Caribbean Sea. The Coast Guard currently operates more than 350 stations across Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Puerto Rico and Guam. The Coast Guard Gift History in North Lauderdale began with a humble beginning. A group of men from Fort Lauderdale were tasked with providing security for the local shipbuilding yards during World War I. After the war ended, these same men established the First National Park Service in Fort Lauderdale as part of an effort to keep Floridians safe while they worked on their vessels. In 1935, another group of Fort Lauderdale men organized the North Miami Beach Volunteer Fire Department as part of an effort to help serve needs within North Miami Beach communities. Throughout these years there have been many talented individuals who have dedicated their lives to helping others through service with the Coast Guard - from Governors to firefighters! In 1947 a new Headquarters complex was built at Hawthorne Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale which housed all aspects of the Coast Guard including Administration Building (later renamed Commanding Officer's quarters), Police Department Building (later renamed Headquarters), Courts Building (later renamed courthouse), Engine House (later renamed Engine House Annex), Auxiliary Landing Field (later named East Thomas Airport) and Marine Air Station Miramar which served as homeport for Helicopter Squadron V-2 flying experiments conducted by Drs John Pogue and Orville Wright at nearby Plantation Ranch! A year later in 1948 a new tower was erected on what is now Northwest 14th Street adjacent to Northeast 9th Avenue which became known as Towers 1 & 2! This structure was used until 1966 when it was replaced by Towers 3 & 4! These towers remain today as iconic landmarks within our community! In 2001 a brand new headquarters complex was constructed at Northwest 44th Place adjacent to Northwest 23rd Street which became known as Headquarters 5!! This structure remains today as one of our most iconic structures within our community! Throughout these years there has always been an effort put into order form gifts for members of the coast guard - both inside and outside of our community! The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect the nation’s coasts, waters, and people from harm; and provide leadership in maritime security. The Coast Guard Gift History begins with the first U.S. Coast Guardsmen on shore during the American Revolution. In 1790, a group of five men were assigned to duty at Governors Island to help protect New York City from pirates. The first items that these men acquired as gifts were pistols and knives they had picked up while patrolling the coast! The Coastal Security Act of 1954 created the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as an independent agency within the Department of Commerce to help keep our coasts safe from pollution, hazards, terrorism, and other threats thereto. NOAA’s responsibilities include monitoring coastal weather patterns; managing coastal fisheries; advising on issues surrounding energy security; developing homeland defense plans; management of marine resources including oceanography and sanctuary areas; providing support for Homeland Security functions through its regional centers across America.;and providing information technology capabilities to law enforcement agencies throughout America.} Since then, many advancements have been made in regards to gift history for members of the Coast Guard- both before and after NOAA was created! This tornado destroyed over 50 homes and killed four people. North Lauderdale was established in 1895 by J.B. Dearborn, a businessman who built the first north-south railroad line in Broward County. North Lauderdale became a city in 1912 and its commercial center grew rapidly due to its location near Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. In the 1920s, North Lauderdale annexed part of Deerfield Beach, which made it one of the most populous cities in Florida. The population of North Lauderdale peaked at over 200,000 in 1940 but declined during World War II as many residents enlisted in the military or left for war homes overseas. After the war, growth resumed as new developments were erected along State Road 2A and Boulevard Park Drive. Today, North Lauderdale is a densely populated suburb with ample shopping opportunities and access to major metropolitan areas across Northeast Florida
