North Lauderdale, Florida is a city located in Broward County, Florida. It was founded on December 12th, 1959 by Rev. James Fenton. North Lauderdale is the largest city within Broward County and the second largest city in Florida after Miami Beach. The population of North Lauderdale was 815,844 as of 2017. The name "North Lauderdale" comes from its location on the beachfront between Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. The first European settlers to come to what is now North Lauderdale were fishermen who landed here on their way to sell fish at the Port of Miami. A post office called "North Lauderdale" was established in 1847 and remained in operation until 1959 when it merged with "Fort Lauderdale". A cotton plantation was built near present-day Everglades Boulevard and State Road 7 (now Sunrise Boulevard) in 1851 by Jno Pugh and his sons John Pugh and Cornelius Pugh. In 1892, George Henson purchased 160 acres (65 ha) of land adjacent to this plantation for $1,000 cash which he turned into a town named after him - Hensonborough or Highland Park – later renamed Jacksonville Landing because Jacksonville had become the state capital following annexation by Florida from Alabama in 1907. This early development along US 1 made Jacksonville Landing one of South Florida's most important commercial centers during that time period; also home to banks such as First American BANK & Trust Company, J&C MARBLE COATING COMPANY & DRY GOODS CO., THE WOOLWORTH COMPANY & JAMES Fenton's Evangelical Lutheran Church (later changes). By 1915, much of the original land had been developed into nearby parcels known as Arts District which included portions of today's North Broward Elementary School property across Sunrise Boulevard from where Hensonborough now stands; Pioneer Place Shopping Center occupied area bounded by NW Second Avenue south/westward to SW Third Avenue north/eastward for about two blocks bounded by NE First Avenue east/westward; today’s intersection including NE Second Street west/northwestward with NE First Street east/southwestward also lies within this district boundaries……Today’s buildings date back to 1926 when James Fenton organized what became known as “the FLATS” company which built new homes throughout eastern Broward County……….In 1966 developer Harry Glidden moved 850 people from Plantation Lakes Estates west side into Phase I Subdivision #5b units just north of I-95 exit 5A…..Phase I Units continued through 1976 but Phase II construction never began…..After being abandoned for many years phase III units were started up again around 1990…………..Phase IV Units have not been started up yet…………Today there are over 1800 buildings developments including multifamily housing component(s)………As well As retail properties such as Jimmy John’s Supermarket chain open since 1978………………………………….It has been said that if it weren't for developer Harry Glidden moving 850 people out of Plantation Lakes Estates Phase I Subdivision #5b onto I-95 exit 5A phase III would still be ongoing...............
