North Lauderdale, Florida is a city located in Broward County, Florida. The population was 971,546 as of the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Miami-Dade County and it is also one of its five county seats. North Lauderdale was founded on December 14, 1927 by John Crain and his brother Harry Crain. The original town site was in what is now the eastern part of Fort Lauderdale. The present day North Lauderdale was established on December 14, 1927 by John Crain and his brother Harry Crain when they bought 2 lots from Jno. Purdy for $2 each. The first home built there was a two-story frame cottage with a living room and kitchenette which stood until 1957 when it burned down to make way for shopping center development that included an open air mall with over 200 stores including Sears, JCPenney, Marshall Fields, Montgomery Ward and more than 60 other stores at its peak in the early 1990s reached speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h). In 1951 North Lauderdale became an incorporated municipality which limits zoning authority to three major districts: commercial (northwest corner lot along First Street NW), housing (southwest corner lot at Northwest Trail Drive) and industrial (east side of downtown east of State Road 735). In 1966 annexation by Coral Springs followed; however this annexation did not take effect until 1977 because local voters failed to ratify it as required by state law prior to that date. On November 3rd 1970 tropical storm Earl made landfall along the Gulf Coast near Jupiter Beach resulting in damage to many properties north of I-95 due to high winds gusts up to 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Many homes were completely destroyed or damaged either through direct damage or wind blown debris although some remained standing as sobering examples of Hurricane Andrew's destructive power just weeks later on November 15th 1971 during another major storm event known as storm surge caused flooding that destroyed homes upstream from I-95 between Belleair Bluffs Boulevard westward and then Causeway Bayou southwestward reaching into Dunedin most notably affecting areas around Sunrise Boulevard bridgehead before finally receding behind closed dikes northeastward within 24 hours following landfall primarily damaging portions inland from Boynton Beach but sparing much inland within Duval County kayaks were successfully able to enter tidal waters closeto shorelines above mean high tide late afternoon locations about 12pm est which allowed paddle boarding activities off Intracoastal Waterway extending from Treasure Island southward out into Everglades National Park beyond

North Lauderdale is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. North Lauderdale's name originated from its location on a peninsula in Lake Okeechobee and was derived from "Northeast" as seen by Europeans because of its position on the opposite shore of that body of water from Miami. The first permanent settler in what would become North Lauderdale was James Cook who landed there with his family in 1835. Cook named his land for Captain John Caulfield, 1st Viscount Pembroke (1757-1827), one of Lord Liverpool's two commissioners responsible for Indian Affairs during the period when Florida was part of Mexico. In 1855 developer J.C. Brickell bought some 640 acres (250 hectares) east of downtown Fort Myers and began to build an exclusive community called "Brickell City". The town grew rapidly and soon had a population over 10,000 people living on streets and avenues named after leading citizens like J.P. Morgan, Wm Hogg, Mellon Bank president George Carnegia, Judge William Jeffries, Mayor Amedeo Caruso and more than 100 business men and women including druggist Aimee Semple Marshall Field and real estate developers Harry Haley & partners etc., among others). But while Brickell City enjoyed high levels of success it became quickly overshadowed by nearby Miami which had exploded in size since its founding as a port city centuries earlier - to the point where most residents simply referred to both towns collectively as "Miami". The area now known as North Lauderdale was originally part of the Muskegon Heights Township. The first European to set foot in what is now North Lauderdale was Captain James Cook in 1768, when he mapped the area for the British Crown. In 1836, a group of Seminole Indians attacked and killed two white men, John P. Morgan and Daniel Dennett, on Muskegon Bayou. The residents of Muskegon Heights were able to return home safe but their homes were looted and burned down by the Indians. In 1849, Jacksonville was founded and soon became an important commercial center because of its location on Creek Run Boulevard between federal troops and settlers. In 1857, a group of African Americans settled in what is now Northwest Broward County near Fort Lauderdale beach. They named their community "Fort Lauderdale", after General Edward Butler's military post at Sunrise Plantation near Fort Lauderdale that served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town gradually grew into a major port city with many businesses catering to travelers heading to Jacksonville or Fort Lauderdale from throughout Florida and South America. By 1900, Fort Lauderdale had become one of Florida's most prosperous cities with over 1000000 residents. In 1915, during World War I, North Miami Beach was established as an airfield for U-boats patrolling Florida's coastline. After the war ended in 1919, control over North Miami Beach passed from Germany to Spain through Treaty No 1 which divided up German territory following World War II; this provided Spanish soil with fresh water resources that made it attractive to developers who wanted to build new citrus plantations thereabouts; however these endeavors failed miserably due to disease outbreaks brought about by racoons feeding on fruit bats which were then attracted by display lights put up at many locations around Miami Beach) “Miami Lakes Development Corporation (MLDC) applied for a variance from City Manager Buchanan in order to develop land adjacent Delta Park east of Biscayne Boulevard……….The variance request allowed MLDC access not only for surface infrastructure such as roads and parking but also subterranean utility lines…..MLDC submitted plans for an underground Expressway System totaling approximately 16 miles….the Expressway would have connected downtown Miami with Everglades National Park via four interchanges….the system would have eliminated traffic congestion on Biscayne Boulevard…..” (Source: “Municipal - Lands Requested For Use Of Underground Utilities In Kendall Yards redevelopment project” , Kendall Daily Herald Newspaper Archives Collection Online at http://www2s1e1a2c1d1a52f3/KDHA%20archives/0011%20-%20KDHA%20010005-00010672).
