The city is located on the eastern shore of Biscayne Bay and has an area of 185 square miles (500 km2). North Lauderdale is the county seat of Broward County. As of 2010, it had a population of over 100,000 people. The City of North Lauderdale was formed when two brothers bought some land east of Fort Lauderdale on which they built a small town to house their families. On December 16th 1959 they named their new community North Lauderdale in honor of then-Governor Luther Strange and his wife Ruth Ellington Strange. The first structure erected in the fledgling town was a log cabin that still stands today at 501 W Sunrise Blvd., just west of I-95 and south of Dadeland Boulevard. The cabin served as the town's post office for its first few months until mail could be transported more efficiently via railroads. In 1960 the brothers donated land to build what would become North Lauderdale High School; construction began in 1962 and it opened its doors to students on September 15th, 1963! Today’s building contains many memories from that inaugural school year including alumni meetups and functions such as “A Tribute To JFK” back in November 1963 right before he was assassinated! Today North Lauderdale is known for its vibrant downtown areas with shopping opportunities abound along with world-renowned restaurants and nightlife options like The Park at Jacksonville Beach which lies just across Biscayne Bay from downtown!
