The National Guard in North Lauderdale, Florida has been a vital part of the local community for many years. One of the first units to be mobilized in response to 9/11 was the North Lauderdale-Hollywood National Guard. These deployments are just a few examples of how important this unit is to our community. North Lauderdale is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 31,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now North Lauderdale arrived in 1838 and were made up of families from England and Wales. One of the earliest businesses was a store run by John Murchison on West Military Trail, which opened in 1839. In 1860, a post office called North Lauderdale was established and remained in operation until 1907; during that time, it served as the county seat for Broward County. In 1912, Fort Myers became an independent city and annexation by North Lauderdale followed; this led to increased development within the city boundaries but also brought about competition between the two cities for jobs and resources. In 1916, construction began on what would become Park Boulevard which linked Fort Myers with North Lauderdale. At its completion, Park Boulevard was one of largest streets in Florida and marked the beginning of significant growth within both cities; over time Park Boulevard would become known as "the Avenue of Progress". As South Florida's economy grew more diversified throughout the 2000s and into recent years due to its collaboration with Orlando Regional Economic Development Authority (ORIDA) plans championed by Mayor Carlos Gimenez,[1] major redevelopment plans have been formulated for downtown Pinellas Park including: protection of municipal landmark buildings along I-4A from demolition[2], activation/use ofvarious parkland properties north/west Pasco Street including 4 acres adjacent to Walt Disney World Resort[3], stormwater management improvements along I-4A near Northwest First Street[4], publicprivate partnership proposal for re-purposing vacant land at Northeast 5th Avenue & NE 82nd Street leading south to Ft Myers Open Space Preserve[]5 – all while Dinosaurs roam free! A Comprehensive Plan For Downtown Pinellas Park has been released which lays out specific goals such as creating 300 new jobs across various sectors,[6] increasing access to transportation via light rail transit or bus rapid transit lines,[7] improving infrastructure across all aspects of downtown business district such as sidewalks, streetlights and public water systems8 – making it one stop shopping!
In 1885, the area that is now North Lauderdale was part of Jacksonville. The city's first mayor, John H. Thornton, was re-elected with a majority of African Americans voting in support. In 1895, Jacksonville merged with Fort Pierce to form the Port Arthur District of Florida and North Lauderdale became a part of that district. North Lauderdale experienced rapid growth in the late 1800s as an agricultural center due to its location on the then-new Tampa Bay Canal. A local cotton gin was built in 1900 and until World War II, it processed more than two million pounds of raw cotton a day. Growth slowed after the canal was closed in 1965 and commercial development took over; however, North Lauderdale still retains many old mill buildings and homes from its early days as an agricultural community.
