The United States Navy has a long and proud history in North Lauderdale, Florida. The city is home to the USS Constitution Museum, which is dedicated to maritime history and serves as a living museum of naval culture. At that time North Lauderdale was part of Jupiter County and its only port of call for American warships. The Commodore’s visit was followed by other vessels from nearby Port Everglades until 1903 when it was decided that Jacksonville should be America’s naval capital because of its well-developed shipping industry. In 1912 Rear Admiral Edward “Ned” Stockton became Commandant of the Coast Guard District 2 which included both Jacksonville and North Lauderdale units under his command. The early years of this century were difficult for North Lauderdale due to World War II and the Korean War; however, through hard work and perseverance, the community has overcome these challenges in recent years. Today, North Lauderdale is a thriving community full of culture, music and artistry that supports itself through its own economy and contributions to local communities throughout south Florida
