American merchants brought goods such as sugar cane and cotton to local residents in droves during this time period. In 1915, Jacksonville developer Will Rogers donated over 50 acres of land in what is now North Lauderdale for a public airport. With this donation, Rogers helped spur development in what would become one of South Florida's most vibrant neighborhoods today. The annexation also created new political boundaries for the municipality which included most of southern Broward County and parts of northern Miami-Dade County including Plantation and Coconut Grove neighborhoods within North Lauderdale limits. This annexation would later be challenged in court but ultimately upheld as legal due to an agreement between then-Mayor John Hirschhorn and then-County Commissioner Manuel Castillo which exempted certainResidents from paying property taxes on their homes within Parkland Village boundaries
