In 1861, Confederate General Stonewall Jackson passed through North Lauderdale on his way to fight against the Union army during the American Civil War. A large cotton gin and two mills were built along Northeast First Avenue in 1865 by J Hogg & Sons Company donated by local businessmen Isaac Hogg and Jabez Bowen as a thank you for Jackson's support during that war. In 1929 construction began on what would become one of South Florida's largest shopping malls when it was developed as part of downtown real estate development called "Downtown Business District". That project included the addition of a new shopping center (the original "North Broward Mall"), an office building complex (the "Downtown Office Building", now known as One Dupont Circle), and four residential blocks east of Interstate 95:Level 2/3 – 262 acres; Level 4/5 – 222 acres; Live Oak Lane – 246 acres; and Bal Harbour Tower – 239 acres which became home to many well-known South Floridians such as Mayor Katherine Harris and Driscoll Baseball Hall Of Fame inductee Lou Piniella among others before being acquired by IKEA in 2000 along with other businesses within Downtown Business District including Hyatt Regency Coral Gables hotel - 901 NW Eighth Ave.,[1] which has been torn down[2], Sears Tower - 601 E Pinellas Ave.,[3] Dolphinarium - 400 NW Fifth Ave., [4],[5],[6]Oprah Winfrey’s current home - 527 Witherspoon St.[7]and T-Mobile Arena - 1 Live Oak Lane former condominium property owner Key Biscayne Shores
