The Air Force bases in North Miami Beach were established during World War II as a result of the need for air defense in the area. The first AFB, M-1, was opened on December 12, 1942 and served as an airfield for bombers and fighter planes. By 1945, all of the Air Force's bombing and fighter stations had been established in or around North Miami Beach. During the Korean War, it was necessary to have a large number of AF jets available in case of war with China. This caused some controversy since many people who lived near bases didn't want jets based there because they considered it to be an invasion by America. But eventually General Curtis LeMay decided that North Miami Beach would become a major USAF base and began acquiring land there. The first AF jet squadron was activated at M-1 on July 1, 1951 and became known as "The Fighting Falcons." M-1 quickly became one of the most important USAF facilities in South Florida because it housed more than 100 aircraft including B-47Fs, B-52s, KC-135Rs and AEW EC-130Js. For years it also played host to military satellites while also serving as a base for missile tests and intelligence gathering missions. In 1991 M-1 was closed due to its age but reopened under new management just weeks later as part of NORAD's Southern Command umbrella organization which included installations throughout Florida (including Homestead AFB). Today AFB North Miami Beach is home to both UH‑60 Black Hawk helicopters (the primarystay for search & rescue operations) as well as F/A‑18 Hornets used for strike operations against targets worldwide from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on shoreline east of town limits
