The North Miami Beach Army National Guard Museum is dedicated to the history and legacy of the military in North Miami Beach. The museum features exhibits on United States military forces stationed in or around North Miami Beach from World War II to today. Additionally, the museum offers a variety of events and programs that focus on the history and culture of the military in Northwest Florida. The first Army unit to be stationed in North Miami Beach was Company A, 5th Infantry Regiment, which arrived here during World War II. After the war, Company A operated out of various facilities until it moved into its current building at 453 NW First Avenue in 1951. In 1957, a new Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion were organized within Company A as part of then-Army Command structure. This battalion was redesignated as 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT), 3rd Infantry Division (III). In 1966, 1BCT was transferred from III to I Corps under then-Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. In 1978, units from both I Corps and III Marine Expeditionary Force were combined into one brigade for increased maneuverability under then-Chief of Staff General James Mattis Jr.. That same year saw also saw an expansion for Unit Museum when two surplus artillery pieces donated by Cleveland Gunnery School were added to displays inside Unit Museum Building #2 (Umbrella Building). In 1984, 1BCT became 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2BCT) 15th Infantry Division under then-Major General James McConnell while still attached to III Marine Expeditionary Force; this change reflected divisional realignment which took place during Reaganomics era across all armed services with unified command structures becoming more prevalent throughout those branches of service. In 1990s several barracks were built along NE Third Street near US 401A/B after purchases by Tampa Bay Naval Shipyard following donation by mayor Bob Buckhorn as part of area's " Naval Boulevard" program Following 9/11 attacks American troops returned home Deployed here until early 2003 Demobilization ended Here began soon afterwards due largely to lack funds available thereafter for renovation project
