The Coast Guard was founded in 1915 as the Miami Beach Patrol. In 1942, the Coast Guard became the Miami Beach Division of the United States Navy. The Coast Guard Station at Miami Beach opened in 1951 and continued to serve as a service hub for all of Miami Beach County until its closure in 1984. The Station reopened as a day-use only facility in 1986. In 1988, Congress designated September 25th as National Coast Guard Day and on that date, the Station reopened under new management as The National Coast Guard Museum. The Museum closed in 2003 but reopened again in 2017 with an exhibit about the history of the station and town during World War II. Today, it is home to the remainder of the collection from both periods including artifacts from both US Naval forces stationed at our base and those operated by local law enforcement agencies which are also part of our mission. The History of Hurricane Irma On Sunday morningSeptember 20th, 1935 Hurricane 'Irma' made landfall near Key WestFlorida just short of where we now stand on Biscayne BayouMiamiDade countyand struck directly between us and Fort Lauderdale across I-95 just east of downtown Fort Lauderdale This was one ferocious storm! Winds reached over 150 mph (240 km/h) gusts were measured up to 350 mph (500 km/h). A F4 tornado touched down about 2 miles (3 kilometers) northwest cornerof Biscayne Boulevardjust before impact with Asbury Park Marina complex resultingin extensive damageto buildingsand other structures within area . More than $450 million worthof property damage was reported statewide making Irma one of deadliest tropical cyclones ever recorded It is estimated that more than 50%ofthe total valueofdamagewasitselfinfrastructure! Many homes were destroyed or severely damagedIn addition untold numbersof people lost their lives throughoutthestorm . With winds this strong many structures had no chance whatsoever totake serious damage .....virtually everything inside these homes hadto be taken down!' A few years later on October 15th 1937 a much larger hurricane named 'Franklin' hit Florida Keyshitting hardest near Clearwater beachheading out into open water offshorenearbyIslandKeyBiscayneBayouAnd passing just south of Homestead airfield prior tothe latter's opening less then 24 hours earlierLeading t onow what is now known as Irma's eye .....this powerful storm caused widespread Damage including thousands o f people who lost their homesAs well amonticketsintheairporttothestationsaroundthecountry Including New York City ...This catastrophic event led to passageofthedialysislawenamingitHurricaneFloyd . North Miami Beach,Florida is a small town located on the north side of Miami. The population was 16,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of Dade County and has a coastline on Biscayne Bay. The town's economy is based in tourism and its position as a retirement community allows it to remain relatively self-sufficient. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now North Miami Beach were fishermen from Cuba who set up their temporary homes on Little Havana Key in 1835. By 1840, there were over 50 boats fishing along Biscayne Bay when Captain John D'Urville discovered North Miami Beach and named it after his home island of Saint Martin de la Vega (now Virgin Gorda). In 1851, Simon Bolivar Tallentyre built a summer residence here called Tallassee House which became an important stop for wealthy Cuban Americans visiting South Florida during the Seminole Wars and afterwards. In 1912, developer Jens Jensen established Jensen’s Coconut Grove Golf Club which still operates today as one of the most well-known courses in all of Florida – with 9 holes that play lengthwise around a large lagoon filled with green fees averaging $135 per round). In 1940, Dr. Bernard Murchison developed Miramar Lakes south of North Miami Beach into one of South Florida’s most prestigious golf resorts offering championship caliber golf tournaments year-round as well as several dozen campsites and villas for rent throughout the season. North Miami Beach, Florida is a city located in the Miami-Dade County region of South Florida. The population was 27,439 at the 2010 census. North Miami Beach is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the north, the Everglades to the east and south, and Flagler Sound to the west. North Miami Beach's ZIP code is 33139. The first people to live in what is now North Miami Beach were part of Indian tribes that roamed this area before European settlement began. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now North Miami Beach were Spanish colonists who landed on December 12th, 1513 on an island in Biscayne Bay. They named their new colony Santa Cruz de los English because they had been sent there as missionaries by Pope Leo X to convert Native Americans from their pagans ways. The Spaniards built a small fort here called San Marcos and some other buildings before moving on towards Key Largo which they named Santiago de Cuba after Saint Dominic (the patron saint for Spain). In 1854, Jacksonville became an independent country under United States rule and its citizens voted to rename themselves Jacksonville with a new city center being built just south of downtown along Flagler Sound. In 1907/08, portions of what are now NorthMiamiBeach were annexed into Jacksonville so that it could have more residents for development purposes which created some resentment among locals who saw their community as theirs alone. On May 3rd, 1912 an agreement was made between Mayor James Phelan and Jaxonians whereby all property within city limits east of Municipal Avenue would be annexed into Jacksonville proper while all property within city limits west of Municipal Avenue would remain unincorporated until annexation could take place; this left most of north Monroe Street undeveloped but allowed for growth around Government Center which developed rapidly due to jobs available thereabouts during World War II when nearby Naval Station Key West hosted many naval officers serving aboard American warships based in Cuban Harbor awaiting orders offshore. After World War II ended many military officers moved away from Key Largo leaving behind large amounts of unused land including much of what is now north Monroe Street; consequently many businesses developed along this street including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company and Atlantic City Savings Bank) as well as several hospitals (International Longshoremen’s Union Hospital and Aventura General Hospital) which continue operating today despite plans by local authorities to redevelop these properties into mixed use housing units only! In 1951/52 parts of north Monroe Street opposite Government Center were purchased by Drury Enterprises Incorporated a phosphate fertilizer company intending them eventually as open space however no such development took place until 1974 when developer Edwin Dorman purchased adjacent properties comprising much current day north Monroe Street from Drury Enterprises resulting in today’s former shopping mall becoming one again! Many homes also survive along side alleyways that served as early transportation connections between various parts of town including today’s NKB Transit stop located near where Government Center once stood! Today’s largely intact traditional architecture can be seen throughout much or all aspects of downtown NorthMiamiBeach dating back centuries such as Kingman House – originally known as Mansion House – USS Constitution Museum - home both for captain Thomas Moultrie USN Commanding Officer during Seminole Wars 1783-84 & later used by Sheriff Marion Griggs 1935-1941 & his deputies during Hurricane Andrew 1969; Masonic Temple No 1 – designed by architect Samuel Gompers Jr.; Presbyterian Church – built c1855; Historical Society Building No 2 - designed by architect Albert Kahn; Baptist Church + Second Baptist Church [now First Baptist Church] - both built c1900; 24 Karat gold coin minted here c1800-1825;; School Annex Building #1 - designed by architects John Rickard & George Condon[now University Place Apartments]; School Annex Building #2 - designed by architects Henry Fenton[now Mainland Village apartments], etc., etc., etc…. Today nearly every building still standing in or around Downtown NorthMiamiBeach has been either directly or indirectly impacted through its history either directly or indirectly helping make it one of South Floridas most unique neighborhoods!
