Military gifts have been a part of the North Miami Beach community for many years. From Bibles and watches to tanks and machine guns, military gifts are a way to show your support for our troops. The first military gift in North Miami Beach was an American Civil War flag. The flag was donated by Mrs. Ferguson to help raise money for the war effort. The flag has since been Displayed at local events and is now one of the community's most popular attractions. In 1949, North Miami Beach became home to the United States Marine Corps Base Camp Leatherneck. This base played an important role during the Vietnam War by providing food, clothing, medical care and other supplies to our Marines stationed there. Today, North Miami Beach is home to two USMC brigades as well as several Coast Guard stations including Cutters Bay Station which provides security for South Florida's water resources. These days, it's not just Marines that we're supporting with our donations - we also appreciate donations from civilians! North Miami Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida. The population was 82,645 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Broward County and one of its seven municipalities. The city's boundaries are Township 1 east of US-1 and west of US-27; Township 2 north of I-95 east to SR 626; and Township 3 south of I-95 west to SR 813. The area now including North Miami Beach was first inhabited by Miwok Indians who called it "Tin Knee" or "Bayou Yawkey". In 1835, Captain John Smith discovered land that would later become North Miami Beach when he explored the bayous near Fort Lauderdale during his voyage along what is now US-1. He named the area after the Danish island town Nyhavn on which he had been exploring for nine months before his ship encountered an obstacle - large bars on both banks of the bay caused him to lose power as he passed through it. In 1892, George Washington Morrison bought 640 acres (248 hectares) from Alachua County for $5,000 cash. He formed a partnership with Rufus Fenton Sewall and built a mill on what would become known as New South Pier Road adjacent to Biscayne Bayou. At first it operated as a small silversmith shop but soon became involved in shipping products from Europe to American ports such as Jacksonville and Tampa. By 1893, Morrison’s company had developed into one of Floridas largest commercial concerns with mills throughout Florida servicing cotton plantations in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia among others In 1916 developer Harry Weisbrot purchased 7 acres (2 hectares) from Morrissey for $10 000 cash which became known as Weisman Place after him In 1922 developers Julius Rosenwald and Will Rogers donated 5 acres (2 hectares) east of Biscayne Boulevard between Weeks Avenue and Ponce de Leon Boulevard to be used for housing development called “The Lakeside Manor” which opened in 1923 . After World War II ended following victory in 1945 over Japan at Okinawa Ridge Field , many servicemen brought their families back home while their units were demobilized or disbanded . Many new residents also came looking for employment opportunities so they started their own businesses like grocery stores, dry goods stores etcetera once they got settled North Miami Beach grew rapidly due largely to its location within easy reach of numerous Interstate highways making commuting convenient . Though some people still commute long distances there has been recent growth in downtown areas like MidtownMiami or OvertownMiami because these areas provide more opportunities for shopping, dining out and entertainment than did formerly exist outside those core neighborhoods
