The North Miami Beach Naval Shipyard was founded in 1944 as the Navy's first shipyard on the mainland United States. The yard became a major player in naval vesselbuilding over the years, building ships for both world wars and home defense. In 1962, North Miami Beach was renamed after Admiral Chester Nimitz, the first Chief of Naval Operations. In 2007, North Miami Beach became one of only a few municipalities in Florida to host its own Fleet Week celebration. This event features displays from local businesses and military installations as well as performances by popular artists. The week culminates with a parade down University Avenue downtown. Today, North Miami Beach is home to five active navy shipyards - including two that are responsible for building submarines - as well as four auxiliary yards used for repairing other navy vessels. The yard has also been designated an "International Center of Excellence" for Maritime Studies and Technology by UNESCO.

The North Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce first organized a navy gift shop in 1946. The shop continued to be operated by the Chamber until 1978. In 1977, the store was moved to 5th Ave and Flagler Dr., north of NW First Street.
North Miami Beach, Florida is a large city in Miami-Dade County, Florida and is the county seat of Miami-Dade. The population was 1,815 as of the 2010 census. The area now known as North Miami Beach was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The name "Miami" was given to the area by Spanish explorers in 1513 when they discovered an uninhabited island in that same bay. In 1845, Jacksonville developer John Prentice decided to build a resort on what would become known as "Pine Island". The first residents of North Miami Beach were Protestant missionaries who arrived in 1849. By 1860, most of what is now North Miami Beach had been developed and named after leaders from South Floridas sugar plantation community – including Pine Island and Cutler Roads. A post office called North Miami Beach was established in 1865, but it did not take hold until 1870 because there were no mail trucks available at that time to deliver mail to South Floridas settlements. In 1892, attorney general William McKinley dedicated a park adjacent to Cutler Road for public use and relaxation east of Biscayne Boulevard which became known as McKinley Park after him and his wife Nina died there while vacationing with their children one year later. This initial development helped spur further growth around Cutler Road with businesses starting up such as cigar stores, laundry services and grocery stores catering mainly to the military presence stationed nearby during World War I (and beyond). As more people moved into this growing district, housing developments started appearing along Biscayne Boulevard with several apartment buildings built between 1925 and 1928 including Regency Towers – still standing today among some ofSouthMiami-Dade's most iconic structures! In 1954, new zoning laws were passed making all commercial areas within two blocks of any street corner zoned for light industrial production only; this led to heavy investment by developers such as Northeastern Development Company who quickly built several high-rise apartments downtown before being forced out by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 which destroyed much of downtownMiami-Dade – leaving North Miami Beach virtually untouched except for some small patches ofland near Regency Towers! North Miami Beach is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,493 at the 2010 census. North Miami Beach is located on the southern tip of Biscayne Bay. It borders South Miami Beach to the south and northwest; Glades Boulevard to the north; and Davie Gardens to the east. The area that would become North Miami Beach was first settled by Native American tribes in what is now Broward County in 1795. In 1824, James Klock founded Klock's Key Plantation on what is now NorthMiami Beach Boulevard near present-day Hollywood Drive. In 1892, Thomas Edison established his experimental laboratory on Biscayne Boulevard in what is now North Miami Beach. The town of North Miami Beaches was incorporated as a separate municipality on May 10, 1926. In 1941, during World War II, Japanese forces burned down most of downtown North Miami Beach after storming ashore from USS "Arizona" while it was anchored off Biscayne Bay. The city government rebuilt within days and reopened with new taxes and an elected mayor and council system similar to those enjoyed today by residents of SouthMiamiBeach. In 1951-1952 Gail Simone designed a large mural called "Aqua Kitty" for use as part of advertising for Dunhill cigarettes across two blocks of Northwest First Street (now NW Third Avenue) between Monroe Drive and Flagler Drive - one block west of current-day NW Second Avenue NMB has been preserved as part of Museum District development plans for this area including plans for a future stadium/museum combo along Flagler Drive connecting museum district with I-75/US 1 motorway which will also include retail stores . After several years planning demonstrations began but no construction could begin due to lack of funding but eventually resulted in RTA reopeningFlaglerDriveMuseumsDistrict late 2013 after numerous protests from Neighbors who saw potential destructionofoneof their community jewels
The North Miami Beach Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It encompasses 154 contributing buildings and sites in theNORTH MIAMI BEACH AREA. The district is bounded by Northwest Seventh Street to the south, Niles Avenue to the north, Biscayne Boulevard to the east, and Southwest Eighth Street to the west.
