There are coffee historians who will tell you that North Miami was the birthplace of the coffee industry in Florida. The first roasters and grinders on Long Island were transplants from Holland who brought their own methods and equipment with them when they arrived in the late 18th century. These early coffee houses served as a social center for the community and acted as a meeting place for traders, sailors, and other business people. The area now called North Miami was developed primarily by landowning families during the 19th century. They used their property to grow cotton, sugar cane, corn, and other crops which were sold to neighboring townspeople or exported to Europe. This landed aristocracy also invested in local lumber companies which built homes, churches, schools, and other infrastructure in what is now North Miami. One of these gentlemen who played an important role in developing this region was John D’Arcy Gould. He purchased 1/4 mile of beachfront property on Biscayne Bay in 1892 and founded Gould’s Coffee House which became one of the most popular cafes in South Miami. At its peak it had over 100 customers who would come to drink coffee while watching sailboats moored at the dockyard across the bay. During World War II Gould’s served as a supply depot for both American forces fighting overseas and Japanese troops occupation of South Florida. In 1951 Gould merged with two other merchant companies forming Coral Gables Coffee Company Limited which continues today as one of North Miami’s leading businesses

In 1957, North Miami became the first city in South Florida to establish its own commercial coffee cooperative. The area now known as North Miami was first settled by the Tequesta people in 1670. In 1795, Ayer County was created from parts of Dade and Kendall Counties. Ayer County contained what is now North Miami Beach along with all of today's townships of Boca Raton, Coral Gables, Davie Gardens, Hollywood Hills, Mayport/Stuart Park/West Palm Beach and Weston Village within its boundaries. In 1857 Floridian Augustus Fenton erected a sawmill on the mouth of the river near what is now Northwest First Street at Key Biscayne Boulevard to produce lumber for Jardine & Watt’s steamboats that transported passengers upriver to Key West. By 1865 twoand three-quarters miles (6 km) north from where he had constructed his mill there were also several small stores owned by citizens or leased to them by Johannes Gutenberg who founded Broward County in 1824; these stores produced lumber for buildings such as Fort Moultrie which later became Fort Lauderdale

North Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 763 at the 2010 census. The term "north" in this context means east of I-95 and north of the Everglades. In 1835, two surveys of North Miami were made by Captain Robert Ecker and Lieutenant George Stephenson; one showed that land to the east of I-95 had been reserved for slaves, while the other showed that much of what is now known as North Miami was once part of Indian Country. In 1837, General James Wilkinson awarded land to Henry Flagler in exchange for his pledge not to sell any African Americans within Jacksonville. The first white settler in what is now North Miami was John Pemberton who purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) northwest of present day Northwest Blvd., on a bluff overlooking Biscayne Bay from where he could watch the bay and view potential investors coming and going on Sunoco Creek. In 1886 developers built Fort Lauderdale's first hospital; it became Stonington Hospital which merged with Broward Memorial Hospital in 2002. In 1907 developer Arthur Dreyer bought 2/3 acre (0.90 ha) east of Northwest Blvd., west of US 27 and south of State Road A1A for $1 million (). He named it Coconut Grove after his coconut plantation outside Stonington, Connecticut (). Dreyer laid out streetscape features such as double wide driveways with Centerline Drive turning into NW Bluffs Drive (), chain link fences () around homes (), wide sidewalks (), trees () on every block (), golf courses () nearby (). By 1928 Coconut Grove had approximately 10,000 residents (). At its peak in 1930 Coconut Grove had more than 25 schools (), 20 churches (), 12 hotels (), 6 movie theaters (), 3 amusement parks () and 5 coffee shops (). Coconut Grove began declining during World War II due to air raids but recovered by 1950s when home builders added new housing developments such as Park Ridge Estates (); Sunrise Pointe (); Coral Gables (); Key Biscayne (); Maraval Heights (); Pinecrest ; Englewood ; Hollywood Hills ; Palmetto Bayou ; Plantation Woods ; Gulfstream Town Center (); Weston Lakeside Club ). By 2000 Coconut Grove's population stood at just under 10,000 residents (). However growth resumed later that decade when Sugar Land opened up along I-10 West which attracted developers including Jupiter Group Development Company LLC (JGDO), owner and operator of Amway Centers throughout Florida; Alliant Energy Corporation (AEP); Clear Channel Communications Inc.; Mediagenic plc.; Philips International plc.; Intermountain Pipeline Partners LP.). As development increased there were concerns over noise pollution from factories adjacent to Coconut Grove lakeshore (); however these fears have been largely quashed by recent zoning changes allowing taller buildings closer to water sources*. Today many properties within walking distance or phone call from downtown feature high end apartments*, restaurants*, stores*, museums* etc.* * Note: While there are some factories still close proximity to neighborhoods like Coral Gables or Sunrise Pointe - they are typically smaller plants operated by owners directly - most factory operations are now located away from populated areas
North Miami was the site of a Concentration Camp during World War II. The camp was located on Fort Lauderdale Boulevard and Northwest Seventh Street. It operated from 1942 to 1945, and housed some 3,000 political prisoners from around the United States.
