The first European settlers in what is now North Miami were Spanish fishermen who named their settlement La Fortuna because they had good luck there during their catch-and-release expedition off Key Biscayne Bay in 1693. In 1892, a group of German immigrants founded what became known as "Kleindeutschland" (English: "Little Germany"). The community prospered due to its location on newly developedKey Biscayne Boulevard just east of Northwest First Street and west of Southwest Second Street – thus becoming one of the first areas in South Beach/Brickell to beDeveloped residential areas with easy access to transportation, jobs and restaurants. Kleindeutschland soon grew into an incorporated municipality with its own government and school board. On October 2, 1912, Kleindeutschland amalgamated with neighboring communities Parkmoor (founded 1892), Tustin (founded 1895), Hollywood Hills (founded 1899) and Coral Gables (formed 1907). These five independent municipalities united under one management structure known as the Public Service District No. 5 until it was disbanded in 1959 when all seven municipalities were consolidated intoMiami-Dade County pursuant to then-Article XIII Section 3(a)(1) of the county charter
