North Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 86,433 at the 2010 census. It surrounds the University ofMiami campus and forms a metropolitan area with a population of over 300,000 people. North Miami is home to the largest concentrations of Hispanics in Greater Miami-Dade County and also has significant African American and Asian populations as well as some European descent. The city's namesake is north of downtown on Biscayne Bay. The first Europeans to explore what became North Miami arrived in 1565 by sailing from Cuba under leadership of Juan Ponce de León on an expedition led by Menendez de Ojeda. De León named it Nueva Vizcaya y la Isla Real after his patron saint, Victoria (Isabel). By 1614 Nueva Vizcaya had been annexed by Spain and renamed Santiago de Cuba; when England took control of Spanish America in 1783, it retained this name for its colony at Havana until 1802. In 1837 Santiago de Cuba was transferred to Mexico City as part of the Mexican–American War Treaty; as part of that treaty Cuban citizens were allowed to become US citizens but they were not given citizenship rights until 1959 when Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba and granted them full citizenship status within his new Communist government In 1898 Nueva Vizcaya was again divided into two parts: east side (Nueva Vizcaya vecina) became part of Dade County while west side (Leytengasta) became part of Homestead District #2 which later formed Clearwater Township In 1907 Llewellyn Hixon bought 1/4 interest in land bounded by Northwest 1st Street towards Biscayne Bay, Northeast 2nd Street towards NW 9th Avenue NW & Central 4th Street & he gave it name "North Miami" Hixon ran unsuccessfully for Congress on several occasions from 1903 through 1908 because he could not get support from either party headquarters During World War I Captain James Akins who commanded Fort Myers Division Signal Corps detachment served with distinction during 1917 Battle off shore off Key West running supplies ashore along Monroe coast trying to save men stranded on Yacht Club boat

The city of North Miami, Florida was founded in 1892 by members of the Miami Tribe of Indians. After a series of fires that destroyed much of the Indian Village in 1896, the community consolidated into a single municipality. The first mayor of North Miami was Frank B. Park and he served from 1893 to 1897. In 1907, NorthMiami became an incorporated town with a Mayor-Council form of government. The first Councilman was J.C. Wylie and the second Councillor was Simeon Piozzi Jr.. In 1990, North Miami amalgamated with neighboring Lauderdale County to form the Broward County region as part of efforts to reduce countywide population growth. As part of this process, many businesses and residences within the city were lost or sold off to developers or other interests outside the city limits for what would become known as "the rezone." Today, North Miami is a thriving community working together towards its common goals such as economic development and quality living opportunities for all residents. With over 1,000 businesses and more than 100 homes available for purchase or rent throughout its boundaries, residents are able to enjoy all that South Florida has to offer without leaving their doorstep!
The area now known as North Miami was first settled in the early 1800s by European Americans. The first permanent settler was James Baldwin, who came to Florida in 1821. In 1826, a group of British adventurers named the Company of Royal Adventurers established a forte on what is now Northwest 68th Street and Seventh Avenue in Miami Beach. The fort served as an outpost for trade and exploration during the early Fort Lauderdale region's development. In 1835, following annexation of Cuba by Spain, Jacksonville became a part of Spanish Florida and North Miami remained an unincorporated community within that territory. In 1840, after winning a territorial election as part of the Mexican-American War, United States President Andrew Jackson approved U.S. annexation of all land west of Texas (the so-called Great Western acquisition). As a result, North Miami became part of newly annexed New York City. By 1860, however, most European American settlers had departed South Florida for other parts of America or been replaced by African Americans from Africa who had come to work on sugar plantations in southernFlorida. As a result, only about 10%of North Miami's population remainedEuropean American when it became part ofMiami County in 1903; most residents were black immigrants from Haiti or Cuba who had arrived during the late 19th century wavesof immigration to south Florida specifically for sugar cane slavery and then followed relatives into US cities where they worked various odd jobs until emancipation in 1865 brought them here permanently. Miami County was reorganized into municipalities at its creation in 1903; among these were North Miami which incorporated on November 3rd that year with its current name; Overtown which chose same day as North Miami but changed its name to Overtown/ Kendall shortly thereafter due to neighborhood opposition; Brickell which chose November 15th instead but kept its original name; Midtown which chose December 1st but changed its name back to Brickell soon thereafter because it conflicted with nearby Midtown Park; Coral Gables which chose December 15th but kept its original name despite objections from adjacent Indianola ; Coconut Grove which opted not to incorporate and continued using their original names until 1959 when they too joined Coral Gables.; Flagler Beach which opted into city status rather than incorporation and continued using their original names until 1984 when they too joined Coral Gables.;]
