In 1836, Aiken's company transported 300 people including 30 Americans downriver to Ft Myers (then called Fort Myers) where they commenced construction of one of the first steamboat navigation routes betweenthe Gulf of Mexico and Cuba through the now known Tampa Bay area. By 1840 there were over 100 American citizens living in North Miami with some erecting buildings on Ponce de Leon Avenue near today’s Government Center which became home to many prominent families including Jansen’s grandson General James Harnett Janson (1861-1945), father-in-law Peyton Willingham (1842-1927), Commodore George Dewey (1856-1941), Admiral Harry Wainwright (1792-1875), Mrs Justice Harlan Talbot Richardson (1794-1868) and many others during that time period such as Mrs Katherine Mayo Barron who died unmarried at age 97 years old in 1984; Colonel Samuel Worth Mayo Jr.(born c/oGeneral James Harnett Janson April 20th 1889 d/oSamuel Worth Mayo Sr., March 7th 1912); Mrs Florence “ Flo” Jean Wyman(baptized February 21st 1922 c/oFrankie Raynor Wyman d/oFloyd Charles Wyman); Dr Edwin Sisson(died October 11th 1957 aged 83 years old). In 1845 Captain Alfred King founded Kings Landing Plantation which extended into present day Overtown along Biscayne Boulevard adjacent to today's Gold Coast Aquarium just before it became part of neighboring Wynwood neighborhood annexed by NorthMiami in 1953 after becoming a separate municipality pursuant to an act passed by Congress entitled "An Act To Annex certain Villages within this State Into New Counties". At its peak there were more than 1,000 residents living scattered throughout nine townships encompassing most of what is now Overtown - Coconut Creek Estates; Harbour View Isles; Golden Mile; Jack Benny Slope; Museum District; Northwest Side - all within today's boundaries of NorthMiami proper corresponding approximately with present day NE 15th Street corridor between NW 5TH Ave N & NW 8TH Ave N & NE 16TH St N while also adjoining Parkland subdivision extending northeastward past NW 6Th Ave NA towards Broward County line although annexation proceedings are ongoing resulting in various rezoning changes therein such as reducing current acreage limits thereby making overtOWN an open community situated chiefly within its original town boundaries having Grove City University campus located herein since 1975 latter also incorporating much recently developed property situat

In 1892, entrepreneur Julius Rosenwald developed what would become downtown North Miami with help from his brother Alfred Rosenwald Sr., one of America's leading investors in transportation companies such as American Railway Company (ARCO), Southern Railway (SR), and others. Rosenwald organized several streetcar companies to run along Flagler Street between Eighth Avenue and Monroe Boulevard in northern SouthMiami then sold these services for $1 per trip to citizens who bought tickets from newsstands or kiosks within walking distance of their homes. These day-trips continue today as bus routes running along Flagler Street connecting Downtown North Miami with Midtown SouthMiami via Monroe Boulevard eastbound and First Avenue westbound
The area now known as North Miami was once a part of Spanish Florida. The area, then called "Misión de San Juan Capistrano" (Mission of St. John the Baptist), was founded by missionaries in 1565. The mission was abandoned in 1636 and most of the land within its boundaries reverted back to Indian control. In 1795, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and developed it as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1838, Seminole Indians attacked a U.S.-controlled military detachment near what is now Northwest Miami Beach and killed six soldiers including two officers. This event is considered the start of the Seminole Wars between American settlers and Seminoles. In 1839, General Omar Pérez's army marched into central Florida to quell a uprising among Native Americans led by Chief Osceola. After months of fighting, Pérez retreated and returned to Mexico City with his remaining troops on October 20th, 1840; he had lost more than 2,000 men in battle alone. In 1843-44 an exploratory party led by Captain David Cushing explored parts of what are now Broward County andMiami-Dade County; they found sugarcane fields but no buried gold or other treasure discoveries worth exploiting at that time. However, Cushing did report finding some natural gas wells north of Biscayne Bay in Marchetto Point on December 3rd 1845 while sailing from Havana Harbor to Key West under command of Commodore James Wattson . On February 14th 1846 Lieutenant George Futch discovered oil seeps about four miles offshore along Biscayne Bay which were later named for him – Offshore Gulf Energy Co., Inc.. On March 1st1846 Mexican pirate José Manuel Márquez y Gasset captured two English marines aboard USS Constitution off Fort Lauderdale–Canton Canal after stealing their stores supplies valued at $10,000 (). The US Navy destroyed Márquez y Gasset's ship before he could loot any further vessels during their next engagement against him off Marathon Beach on April Fool's Day 1847 (). A few weeks later another pirates squadron under Márquez' old friend Francisco de la Rúa sacked Santiago de Cuba harbor which resulted in shipswrecks off Marlinspiel Causeway (), damaging or sinking over 100 vessels (). A third engagement took place off Tampa Bay near Clearwater Naval Station on November 8th1847 when royalists seeking revenge for earlier events boarded USS Constitution HMS Oceanic () resulting in one casualty for each side ()
