The North Palm Beach, Florida Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. On Dec. 12, 1917, the 1st Battalion, 2nd Regiment (Florida) was activated as part of the United States First World War Draft Act of 1917. The battalion was composed of men from Polk County and Muskegon County. On Jan. 8, 1918, the battalion was redesignated as Battery A in honor of Major General John Pemberton who had been killed in action on July 3rd during the Battle of Belleau Wood. The battery operated out of Fort Myers until it was disbanded on Nov. 9th, 1918 due to lack of personnel and equipment. In 1924 the battalion was reactivated at Fort Myers as Company H with Headquarters at Fort Myers Barracks and two Battalions at Naples Field Armory being organized under command of Lieutenant Colonel James Jett Gannon Jr., Commander Company H (the 1st Battalion became Company I on Jan 1 1925). With increasing mobilization for World War II there were no more designation changes until 1949 when Company H reverted back to its original name Companies A-D which remain today with Headquarters located at Ft Myers Barracks. The battalion reached full strength on Dec 15 1942 when companies C-G were activated from Reserve units in Broward County and Miami Dade County respectively; these companies conducted training camp at Hollywood Park near Boca Raton before crossing over into Florida for combat duty in December 1942 when Japan attacked Pearl Harborpite American warning shot that same day; all battalions served overseas between December 1942 and April 1945 inclusive; company F returned home late 1943 after fighting through Japanese occupation force in New Guinea while others fought throughout Pacific Theater including campaigns against Okinawa and Guam; finally company K deployed to European Theater arriving in May 1945 just prior to surrender following battle around Saarbrucken Germany where they made final stand; During war service members received both military decorations awarded by U.S government such as Distinguished Service Crosses(DSC), Air Medals(AM)and posthumous awards such as Croix de Guerre(Croix de Guerre).
