The North Port Air Force Base (NPAB) was established in 1953 as the First Tactical Air Command headquarters. The NPAB is a joint military and civilian installation, subordinate to the Florida National Guard. It contains an air force depot, Mather AFB, home of the Fifth Bombardment Wing; an air power training center; a research and development facility; and three squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagles. The base also has a detachment of the Marine Corps' 1st Brigade Combat Team at Mather AFB. In 1992, North Port opened its first command post for Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). This was followed by a new squadron of F-16A Fighting Falcons in 1995. In 2002, NPAB became home to America's only Active electronically scanned array radar station—the JTIDS Pathfinder Radar Station which provides DoD with clandestine imagery support for Operation Neptune Spear operations. Today, Northport Air Force Base houses more than 4200 active duty members and retirees from across the Department of Defense including: Air Force Reserve Forces; Army Reserve Forces; Coast Guard Reserve Forces; Navy Reserve Forces; Marines Corps Expeditionary Unit -1st Battalion (7th Marines); National Guard Bureau component units/units under state control such as: Florida Airmen's Association - Jacksonville Division Headquarters & Headquarters Company (9TH Airmen); Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office - Intelligence Support Unit #2 (ISMU 2), Patrolmen's Benevolent Association - Northeast Section Headquarters & District Commander (PACSO 3), Tallahassee Police Department - Tactical Sergeant II unit(TSI 2), South Florida State College Health Sciences Center Services Directorate - Medical Services Directorate #1
