Army gift history in North Port, Florida began with World War I. The North Port Armory was founded in 1915 as the Army armory of the County of Pinellas. It was located on Sunrise Boulevard in North Port and functioned as a general storage and distribution center for ammunition and other military supplies. In 1943, the armory became an air force base when it was transferred from Fort Myers to North Port. In 1959, the Armament Division of the Department of Defense took over operation of the armory and it became known as the Army Missile Command Center. The command center played a significant role in launching missiles into orbit during both world wars. In 1973, the Missile Command Center was relocated to Vandenberg AFB, California after being moved from Miami Beach due to budget cuts at DoD. The command center continued operations until its closure in 1991. Since its closure, parts of the old armory have been used as office space for various businesses including an electrical contractor named Armstrong Electric Company who renovated part of it into their plant until 2002; and another business which leased space from Armstrong called E-Labs which developed new technology such as 3D printing at that time before moving their equipment to another part of town where they still operate today (See:Armaments Division Of Department Of Defense History). The oldarmory building is now home to community groups like historical society meetings and art shows organized by local artist Lori Whitehead while also serving as a functioning museum open tothe public on certain days each year during October or November when there are no events scheduled at Fort Myers Municipal Airport which is across town from downtown Northport Municipal Airport where most military aircraft land and taxi out for flights departing from Vandenberg AFB). The North Port Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1919. The first fire department was made up of five men and it served a small town on the bayou. In 1930, the department bought its first truck and began to provide services to the community. A new station was built in 1949 and the department became fully operational. In 1971, the North Port Volunteer Fire Department merged with the neighboring Stonington Volunteer Fire Department.

In 1836, the first black man to set foot in North Port arrived from Africa. He was Dr. John A. Payne, who had come to Florida as part of a slave trade expedition. Payne built the first house in North Port, and many other white settlers followed his lead over the next few decades. The town grew rapidly during this time and soon boasted a population of around 100 people. In 1855, NorthPort became the terminus of the Stonington Railroad, which made it easier for goods to move between Miami and Tampa. This also helped make NorthPort one of the most important commercial centers in Florida at that time. In addition, NorthPort was known for its annual fairs, which attracted attention from all over America. During World War II, Northport played an important role in the war effort by providing essential supplies such as food and munitions to soldiers stationed throughout southern Florida. In 1948, NorthPort was designated as state capital of Florida by Governor Chandler Bible under then-Governor Billy Graham’s efforts to improve relations between state capitals across America.
